I can open in safe mode as suggested by some respondents, but then my messages are without images. When I restart computer, if I don't hold down shift key the computer freezes. If I don't go to thunderbird, computer is fine.

Wonderful! I'm glad it worked. Good for you for sticking with it. Don't forget to mark the issue as solved so it can help direct others in the future. And thank you for the tour guide offer - it's duly noted. Have a great day.

Sounds like one (or more) of your add-ons don't have an update for the current TB version. You can check each add-on individually to see the latest version compatibility, or switch them on one at a time. When you find the one causing the issue, simply disable it until the author updates it. They're usually pretty good about creating updates.

As for your images, in OPTIONS-PRIVACY, tick 'Allow remote content'. Safe mode probably disables it as a default. When you're in regular mode, your preferred settings kick in.

Thank you for your assistance.

I can't figure out if I'm still in safe mode, but at least TB isn't freezing my computer.

I did update all the add-ons.

My security was already set at "Allow remote content" so that wasn't the issue.

I'll try to follow up later, but in the big scheme of things, not having images in emails is not earth shattering.

Catherine.

Forgive me if I was unclear. What I should have said was that although your add-ons are probably up to date, they may not necessarily be compatible with the most recent Thunderbird release. Sometimes tweaks need to be made, and the authors need extra time to make them. It is usually noted on the add-on page if there is a compatibility issue.

As for safe mode - easiest way to get out of safe mode is simply to restart as you normally would (no Shift+start).

If after restart you are still having a problem, I would suggest the following. Step 1: Turn off hardware acceleration. Go to OPTIONS - ADVANCED - GENERAL tab: and un-tick the box 'Use hardware acceleration when available.

Restart and see if it solves the problem. If it doesn't go to next step.

Step 2: Disable all your add-ons (don't delete, just disable). If after restart everything works fine, it means at least one of your add-ons is causing the issue. Enable each add-on one by one until the issue reappears. Then keep that add-on disabled until the author updates it.

The issue with your images may be a symptom of the problem and may correct itself once the actual problem is resolved. The way I understood your situation was that you see images normally, but your computer freezes. But when you are in safe-mode, images disappear but your computer works fine. If this is the case, we just need to get you functioning in normal mode.

I can't seem to get out of safe mode. I've restarted TB and also restarted computer but it doesn't go out of safe mode.

I unticked the hardware acceleration but that didn't do anything.

This is where I may test your patience . . . when I go to the add-ons, I can't find a way to disable them - for each one it only has an action, which is to update, if one wants. (See attached image.)

Thank you for your patience.

Catherine.

Well, I think I have a solution to one of our problems.

You are in Mozilla/Firefox (the web browser), not Thunderbird. So first things first, in Thunderbird, go to the menu and select TOOLS - ADD-ONS. A new tab within Thunderbird should open up and show you your current add-ons.

You will be out of safe mode automatically once you open up Thunderbird as you normally would. No special steps.

And I appreciate your concern about my patience but don't worry. Just let me know if any of my directions are unclear.

Oy!

I got to the prior page I sent you by going to the attached page from TB tools -add ons.

Note that at the top white border it says to "check to see if your plug-ins are up to date", that then led me to the prior page I sent.

So, this attached page is where I end up from TB tools-add ons.

By the way, where on the planet are you?

more options

Heh heh. Almost there. Instead of 'Plug ins' click on 'Extensions'. But.... before you send me an image. I want you to close Thunderbird, and then start it again.

Then I want you to tell me if your images are still blocked and/or whatever other issues are occurring. Theeeeen.... send me an image of your 'Extensions'.

)

And I am in Canada, drinking wine which is why I am sooooo patient.

Ah Ha! From Canada . . . I thought that Canadians were so mellow all the time that they didn't need any wine to enhance the experience. My paternal heritage is from Canada - the Maritimes - and mostly from Nova Scotia.

Now, I both turned off TB and the total computer, and nothing happens with the images.

I am attaching the image of 'extensions'.

I noticed on the "Help" tab on TB that there is an option to restart with add-ons disabled. Would that be an option for me?

Thank you, again!

Canadians are pretty mellow; it's my eastern European blood that requires compensation in exchange for being patient. :)

The option to 'restart with add-ons disabled' is also referred to as 'safe-mode'. That's what I thought you did when you mentioned it earlier in the post. It's the same as starting with the SHIFT button engaged.

Ok. We're going to revisit some old ground now that you have your bearings and we are certain you are accessing Thunderbird (TB) rather than Mozilla.

1. You have only two extensions in TB and at this point, I do not see any incompatibility issues. So I would like you to press 'enable' on both. 2. Within TB, go to OPTIONS - ADVANCED - GENERAL tab: and un-tick the box 'Use hardware acceleration when available. (This direction was given above, but I'm thinking you may have done it in Firefox rather than Thunderbird.) 3. Within TB, go to OPTIONS-PRIVACY, and confirm that 'Allow remote content' is ticked. 4. Restart TB - normally. Just close it and open it up again.

Now. Send yourself a test email and tell me exactly what happens or what messages/warnings appear.

Interesting . . . My maternal heritage is all from Eastern Europe

  1. 1. Done;
  1. 2. Already done, unticked.
  1. 3. Yes, ticked.
  1. 4. Done

Email just comes in as a regular email with no messages/warnings.

Other messages that contain images do not display messages.

Thank you!

more options

Umm... wait. I'm confused. Is everything ok now or do we still have a problem?

more options

Every thing is fine except that emails do not display any images within.

more options

Ok. Now I just want to get a clearer visual of these images that are not showing up. 1. Are the images attachments that are being sent to you? 2. Are they embedded images? Sort of like email promotions that have a designs? 3. Are they signatures with logos etc?

Answer for all, and let me know how they actually appear. Ie. Is it a blank box with a small red 'x' in them?

more options

Oh, now I am embarrassed that this is taking so long to resolve and I am taking all of your time. But, I certainly do appreciate all your help.

1. The images are not attachments, they are the images that are in the message itself.

2. Yes, the non-visible images are embedded in the body of the message. I've attached a copy of one of the messages.

3. I haven't received any messages with signatures, but the non-images do include logos, etc.

Thank you!

FYI: I sent a message to myself from the TB email account and both the embedded and attached (pdf) images came through.

I sent a message to my TB account from a non-TB account and the embedded images did not come through

more options

Bah. Don't be embarrassed. An issue is an issue and I wouldn't be helping if I didn't want to. (Besides, it helps take my mind off some coding issues I'm having. So you're helping me procrastinate without feeling guilty!)

Ok, here are a couple of other things I want you to try: 1. Go into VIEW - MESSAGE BODY AS - ORIGINAL HTML (If this is already done, go to next step; if it isn't, refresh and see if it makes a difference. If not, go to next step.) 2. Go int VIEW and make certain that 'DISPLAY ATTACHMENTS INLINE' has a checkmark next to it. (Again, if this is already done, go to next step; if it isn't, refresh and see if it makes a difference. If not, go to next step.); 3. Go into TOOLS-OPTIONS-PRIVACY, in the first section called 'Mail Content' there is a button called 'EXCEPTIONS'. Press it and enter the web address of of one of your blocked images ie: www.llbean.com, and then specify 'allow'. Again, refresh or restart if prompted and see if it effects the messages from this site.

Ideally, there would be an option somewhere that says "Click here to always load remote images from ...", but I can't see that in your image.

And unfortunately, although I've worked through similar situations before, I am unable to duplicate your issue right now so cannot provide another step-by-step. Although I would ask what happens if you right-click on one of those blocked images... does it give you and option to 'load remote content' or 'mark this sender as safe' or something like that?

more options

1. Hooray! Going to 'original HTML' solved the problem!

I assume that means I don't go to the rest of the steps in your message, but if I should, just let me know.

Thank you so much.

If you are ever in Boston, MA usa, I'll give you the best tour of the city.

\And, whenever I can help people procrastinate, I know I've made my contribution to the planet.

Thank you!

Catherine.
