I'm not being asked to save my passwords any longer

I purchased a new computer, and I have noticed I'm not being asked to save passwords any longer, and consequently it doesn't save them. I looked at the possible solutions in help, and it seems it is supposed to save my passwords already. But, it isn't. I do notice there is a little lock looking device where the key is supposed to be displayed next to the address bar on the extreme left. When I click on that, it isn't any help. I don't see the key icon where it is supposed to be, so I can access save passwords? My old computer would ask to save passwords and save them, so I wouldn't have to keep entering them. Any suggestions anyone?

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.

You can also check the password setting:

  • Tools > Options > Security: Passwords: "Remember passwords for sites"

More:

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Hi cor-el,

I'm not operating in private browser mode. Yes, I already did try starting in safe mode, and the problem still exists. I notice looking at the help answers, I'm supposed to see a key to the left of the address bar; I don't. What I do see is green lettering with a lock next to the address. When I click on that, I see something about this site is encrypted. Don't know how I got there, but how do I get my web sites to remember my passwords nonetheless?
Do I some how have to delete this encrypted issue? Thank you.

That is the Site Identity Button.

Note that websites may be using autocomplete=off to prevent Firefox from saving and filling the name and password.
You can remove autocomplete=off with a bookmarklet to make Firefox save the name and password.

Hi Again cor-el,

I now understand the reason behind the green lock icon, it is for a extra level of security with sensitive sites, which this particular site is.
Having said that, if I follow the instructions, and "temporarily remove autocomplete=off", when I load the site in the future, is the situation going to be: when I load the site it will automatically have already loaded my user and password, so I don't have to do that function? If so, I really don't want that to happen.
With my old computer, when I clicked the bookmark for the site, and entered the site, I just had to click on my user name and firefox entered my user and password. Evidently, firefox remembered those parameters for that site, and all was well. Definitely made that procedure easier.
By doing the procedure in autocomplete=off, will this happen? Or, will the situation be, when I click on the bookmark and load the site, both my user and password will be automatically entered? If that were to occur, I would be giving up too much security for that site.
I just would like my new computer and firefox, to enter that web site (scottrade) like it did before, where all I had to do was click on my user and enter the first character of my user and firefox filled in the of my user and password. Thank you, cor-el.

cor-el,

Still can not access the site in question without having enter user &P/W, all the time, and I still see the green lock icon when I load the site. I followed the instructions as per the paragraph:

Bookmark the "remember passwords" link on this page.
Go to the log in page of the site you want to save your details.
Enter your login and password, but do not submit.
Open the bookmark you just made. (Nothing will appear to happen).
Submit.

On subsequent visits, your user name and password should be filled in. If that doesn't happen then see Password only filled after entering user name.

I don't see a form that is submitted like what is mentioned? When I bookmark the link ----remember password, and follow the instructions----go to site an enter user & P/W, but don't click log in on the site, then go to the bookmark I just made and click submit on the form. When I go to that bookmark like instructed after entering info on site in question, I don't get a form, I get just an OK, and I click on it.
Nothing happens, and I still have to enter user & P/W on the site. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
Is this issue related to version 15.0 like I'm running? I didn't have this problem with old version 3.5?

Did you see a count not equal to 0 in the pop-up after running the bookmarklet on the log in page?

Websites remembering you and automatically log you on is stored in a cookie.
Create an allow cookie exception (Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions) to keep such a cookie, especially for secure websites and if cookies expire when Firefox is closed.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in Private Browsing mode.

cor-el,

When I view the bookmarklet box it says: Removed autocomplete=off from 0 forms and from 4 form elements and removed onsubmit from 0 forms?
Don't have any idea what that is, or what it means!!!
I'm not running firefox in private. I will wait for your reply, before I attempt something involving cookies.
It seems every time I get involved screwing around with cookies, I screw up my system. So, before I try a change to cookies set up, I'll wait for your reply about the autocomplete issue first. Again, thank you cor-el.

"from 4 form elements" means that the bookmarklet found 4 input elements with the autocomplete=off attribute. There may be more input fields on that page, e.g. in search bars, with the autocomplete=off attribute.

On which page did you use the bookmarklet?
Then I can check the page code.

Hi cor-el,

The probable reason for the "from 4 forms elements" was me trying several times, I guess 4, to get autocomplete=off to work on the web site in question---Scottrade. The bookmarklet was used on the web site Scottrade.
But, every time I log into Scottrade, I still have to enter user and P/S, even now, after trying, I guess 4 times. With my old computer, and firefox 3.5, all I had to do was enter the first character of my user and the site would load the rest of my user and then my P/S.
Sure would be nice to have firefox 15.0 do the same thing cor-el. Thank you.

The password field on the www.scottrade.com site has autocomplete=off.

It still fills the name and password if I select a name from the drop down list (I keep autofillForms disabled).

You can check the signon.autofillForms pref on the about:config page.

cor-el,

From your reply, I did about:config, and saw that in signon.autofillforms was set to false, like it evidently should be?
You state scottrade has autocomplete=off, meaning it will require me to sign in with user and p/w each time, correct?
You seem to be saying, it will fill in the correct user and p/w from a drop down list. How do I access this drop down list from scottrade?
From the false setting on signon autofillforms, I really don't see any options from that, other than true and I evidently don't want that. It seems to be what it is.

cor-el,

So, if you're able to fill in a name and p/w from a drop down list for a site that has autocomplete=off, how do I do the same thing? What is that procedure, to access a drop down list for user and p/w names? Thank you.
