when I try to send email through my earthlink account, I get this message: Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtpauth.earthlink.net timed out. Try again.

More than a month ago I started being unable to send mail and was getting the same message. I could receive but not send. Earthlink support spent more than an hour trying to fix it with no success. Today, after clearing the history in my browser to fix some issues, I went to the three lines in the upper right of Thunderbird and under Tools I found Clear Recent History. Suddenly, I can now send again out of my Earthlink account.
