After selecting the checkbox 'File names extensions', it will show you the full name including any extensions. So 'userChrome.css' should still say 'userChrome.css' and the 'Type' column should say 'Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).
If the name of the file has changed and it now says 'userChrome.css.txt' and the Type column says it is a 'Text document', then you will need to edit the name of the file. Right click on the 'userChrome.css.txt' file and select 'Rename' from the drop down menu. Remove the .txt so it only says 'userChrome.css' and not 'userChrome.css.txt'. Click on 'OK' If you get a warning about changing the file type, do not worry just click on 'Yes' because you do need to change it.

If you mean the spacing in the Threads Pane, see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1304715
thanks, but i dont understand it . anyway i dont use chrome a userChrome.css can as that person does.
i'm talking about line space between closed messages listed in tb before i open the messages [what are threads in TB ?]
should i revert to the old version maybe?
any help welcome/appreciated
Help/Troubleshooting, Profile Folder, click Open Folder, close TB, create a new subfolder named chrome, then create a new document in chrome with a text editor, save it as userChrome.css, save as type: *.* All Files.
Check that the file type in File Explorer is Cascading Style Sheet, not Text Document.
This method works for all versions of TB. Refer to the pictures here.
thanks i am nearly there. where is file explore pls to do last part . also i cant see pics at that link win 7
File Explorer is the W10 name for Explorer in W7 (Windowskey+E).
that brings up "my computer" where do i go from there?
also i cant see those pics u mentioned they might help, there are 2 on that link but i dont recognize anything useful
should there be anything in the text doc u told to create?
thanks

The userChrome.css file isn't created by default when Thunderbird is first installed. You can create your own in the Thunderbird profile folder: Click the Application menu button, then go to the Help menu and choose Troubleshooting Information. A new tab will open with information about your setup. On the line "Profile Folder" click on Open Folder. In this folder you should create a folder called 'chrome' and within this create a text file called 'userChrome.css' (without the quote marks - it end in .css but NOT .txt). For Linux (and Mac users?), the upper case C in the middle is significant.
On that file 'userChrome.css' @sfhowes mentioned that if you save that text then it will have as result different spacing in the Threads Pane - attached together those 2 pictures so you can see those 2 values results.
Text to save on that file 15 or 25 or any other values - below is that text with 15:
#threadTree treechildren::-moz-tree-row { height: 15pt !important; }
So you can be able to see the results you will need to toggle toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets to true (on "Config Editor...")

sorry ur talking way over my head , any chanch u can address the questions in my previous post? i only need to do the last stage now which is to Check that the file type in File Explorer is Cascading Style Sheet, not Text Document. thanks
Cascading Style Sheet - the files on your computer which end with extension .css Text Document - the files on your computer which end with extension .txt
So this means the file should be userChrome.css but not userChrome.txt or userChrome.css.txt
inside the "chrome" folder i have: new text document .txt userchrome .css
does this look right.?
how do i Check that the file type in File Explorer is Cascading Style Sheet, not Text Document.?, as sfhowes said to do
thanks
Can you add a screenshot here with that/those file(s)? If the file is exactly "userchrome.css" (no blank space anywhere) then is ok
screen shot wont work on that page sorry. nor does print screen
yes its like that except theres the other folder too: new text document .txt
can u pls answer this : how do i Check that the file type in File Explorer is Cascading Style Sheet, not Text Document.?, as sfhowes said to do
thanks

Cascading Style Sheet - the files on your computer which end with extension .css Text Document - the files on your computer which end with extension .txt So this means the file should be userChrome.css but not userChrome.txt or userChrome.css.txt
You mean this answer from above?
yes i have seen that but im still confused. getting even more lost in this ,.
am just trying to follow original advice, i need to check in explorer unless the advice was wrong
can sometime tell me if this is correct: theres the other folder too: new text document .txt
thanks

Other folders or files doesn't matter. For the purposes mentioned on this topic it matter the folder with the name chrome and inside to be a file userChrome.css with that text...

thanks for that , its one question answered.
but am i missing something , i dont know what to do now about "how do i Check that the file type in File Explorer is Cascading Style Sheet". no one considers this is worth answering directly which is strange to me. i must have asked it least 5 times
anyway i still have the big line space problem , so something is wrong thanks

By checking the extension of that file because Cascading Style Sheet - the files on your computer which end with extension .css => that file must have mandatory .css at the end
sorry im not understand what u are saying, i think it will take a different person to explain, but i thank you for trying.
moving on, do you have any ideas to fix the space problem which still exists thanks
Open the chrome folder in Explorer, then Tools/Folder options in Explorer, View tab, uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types'. Does the css file then show as userChrome.css.txt? If it does, rename the file and remove the .txt. If you right-click the file, Properties, it should show Type of file: Cascading style sheet.

i would open in explorer but using 2 keys just brings up "my computer". anyway i went to the new file using your original instruction and its disappeared [it was there yesterday when i revisited it]
ive made the folder again and checked cascading style is correct
if i open chrome folder as i look at screen "chrome" is highlighted on left in the window, and in the right window i have: -new text document.txt -userchrome.css
should there be something in this folder ?
re the question: . windows and e keys together opens my computer, where do i go from there?? i phrased the question carefully above 2/3 times. its above. no one will answer it
re screen shot : as i said somewhere above it wont work on that page. print screen captures it but how do i get the image to you?
as i cant send screen shot i very carefully described the screen i was looking at ..twice.
pls, just take a moment to look. i know ur trying to help me and i really appreciate it. im relatively new to this sort of communication where people often don't seem to see my questions after the very first one
no one will tell me how to do this: "Open the chrome folder in Explorer, then Tools/Folder options in Explorer, View tab, uncheck " Ive asked about 7 times here.....maybe people think im having a little joke!
thanks
thanks
