First, does the site list supported browsers and required plugins, just to make sure it is intended to work in Firefox?

The last version of Firefox that could run the Java plugin was the Extended Support Release of Firefox 52, which has reached its "end of life." So Firefox is not a good option for that site.

If a site requires Java, you can use Internet Explorer 11 with that site. You might still need to update your installation: https://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Oracle has been recommending to sites that they switch from the plugin to an approach called Java Web Start (JWS) which launches the Java code out to Java on your system. If a site has not completed its migration, feel free to give them a nudge so that you have your full choice of browsers.
