Out of curiousity, were you using private browsing when you reset firefox? If you see the icon below in your firefox window, or your Firefox button is purple then you are running in private browsing. You can also check if you are always running in private browsing mode in the Privacy tab of your preferences.
Under private browsing mode, I don't think it saves your history when those windows close.
No I was not but thanks for your input.
Look on your desktop for a folder called OldFirefox, or something like that.
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Recovering%20important%20data%20from%20an%20old%20profile?esab=a&s=restore&r=0&as=s Recovering important data from an old profile If you've had to create a new Firefox profile, this article will explain how to recover information like bookmarks, history and passwords from an old one.
To expand on those last two posts:
Firefox stores your session history in a file named sessionstore.js in your profile folder.
When you start Firefox normally, this file is renamed to sessionstore.bak and a new sessionstore.js is created. You can use either of these to have Firefox read sessionstore.bak:
- "3-bar" menu button > History > Restore Previous Session
- (menu bar) History > Restore Previous Session
If that menu item is grayed out or doesn't work, you may need to rescue the old sessionstore.js file from the folder inside the "Old Firefox Data" folder on your desktop. That was moved there by the Reset feature.
To make the switch, start by opening your currently active profile folder. You can do that using either:
- "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
- (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
- type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This should launch a new window showing your current settings files.
Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:
- "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
- (menu bar) File > Exit
Scroll down to your sessionstore files and rename sessionstore.js to sessionstore.old.
Note: if Windows is hiding the .js extension, you can turn those on using the steps in this support article: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hide-file-name-extensions
Leave that window open, and now open the Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop, drill down into your old profile folder, and right-click > Copy sessionstore.js, then right-click > Paste it into your currently active profile folder.
Start Firefox back up again. If your session doesn't restore automatically, try using
"3-bar" menu button > History > Restore Previous Session
Any luck?
Hi, looks promising but I do not appear to have a sessionstore.js file or folder in my “old firefox data” location. What I do have is this, below : https://www.dropbox.com/s/ivoqioxbz5e82mc/Capture%20firefox.JPG via dropbox & snipping tool Please clarify next step, you appear very knowledgeable. Thanks
Hi Baz777, Windows is hiding the .js from you. There is a fix, linked in my earlier post. (But you can see from the type being a JScript file that it is the .js file)
