I use keyboard shortcuts to move around Firefox. I had highlighted the current URL and then pressed some key combination which appears to have disabled ALL site identity icons. For instance, ESPN and IMDb icons are no longer displayed to the left of the URL. The site information is still there if I click on the grey globe and select more information.

Is there some way for me to re-enable the site icons?

That is not your fault, but the result of updating to Firefox 14

You no longer see the website's favicon on the location bar, but you now see an icon that indicates what kind of connection you have.

If you click the icon then with a normal unencrypted HTTP connection you see:

  • This website does not supply identity information.
  • Your connection to this website is not encrypted.

Only an encrypted HTTPS connection can provide additional information.

The change is for security reasons to prevent websites from spoofing the favicon as a padlock icon or other indication of a secure site.
