Protection fault trying to access printer preference option menu
Yo Dudes & Foxes:
Dell 720 printer, Windows XP system. From any web page or print ready sub-frame when I select file-->print-->properties to change print quality, framing, print on both sides, or whatever Firefox issues a popup error: "Function address 0x0 caused a protection fault ( exception code 0x0000005 )"
It will not proceed after closing the popup. This does not happen in IE9. Any suggestions?

This seems to by a Firefox 4-specific problem. I have the same problem after upgrading from Firefox 3.6.17. You can access the printer properties via the Control Panel with no problems. For now, if you need to change your printing preferences, you will need to do it this way until Mozilla is able to find a work-around. I will post again with my finding using another browser.
Okay, I'm back. No problems using Internet Explorer 8. Must be a Firefox 4 issue only.

YO, Jackdaxter
Thanx for the heads up. Your workaround seems to do the trick. You might advise others to set up the preferences before starting the print operation; otherwise you'll get that same protection fault error from Firefox!
Also, in resolving another question I had, one of our forum advisers turned me on to using a PDF printer with which one can send the output to a virtual printer, that Adobe can read and process. Google "PDF Printer" to find several free, recommended products to take advantage of. An annoying, but adequate workaround. I don't really think this Firefox peccadillo warrants regression to a previous update level; but to each his own...
Ciao for now
I really didn't notice any glitches when trying to print from a PDF file. This application utilizes it's own printing properties to print and accessing the preferences is not a problem. Also, you may want to check on your plugins to see if they are up-to-date. A nice plugin to view a PDF file is Adobe Reader X (comes up as "Adobe Acrobat" in your add-on list) By the way, as of today, you STILL cannot access printer preferences inside Firefox 4. (You will keep getting that same message preceding a "critical stop" sound.)
This is a screenshot of what you get when click on the "properties" tab of your printer using "Firefox 4" application to do so (Please note cursor is not present!):

Greetings. You don't need to fool with Adobe Acrobat to address this particular glitch if you have installed a ( free ) PDF Printer. The Adobe 9 plugin I already have handles the resulting file just fine. Thanx
PRINTER UPDATE! Firefox 4 has a security update that can prevent some printers functions to operate normally. What happens (or so I am told!) is that when you try to print a web page, the printer tries to load a ".dll" file into the browser. Firefox 4 prevents this. You have to uninstall your printer (or change printer types) and reinstall your printer (or change back to the original setting). You may be prompted to align your printer cartridges and such, but that is normal. Just follow the steps as if you first installed your printer! (I still can't access the printer properties, though. Oh, well! At least I can print now!)
I had the "dll" error problem when I had Firefox 4, now I've gone "up"? to Firefox 5, now it's the "0xc000005" error! Had the tech's at Lexmark take over my computer, they went through everything, deleted drivers, re-loaded, etc., problem remains! Just tried over on Explorer 8, SAME trouble! Like JakDaxter3 said, I can print, but can't change any properties! Bummer.

What a singular moniker! Is this debate still alive? I have washed my hands of this annoyance since I discovered the workaround. Obviously, Mozilla isn't paying any attention to it either. Might be time to put this lame horse out of its misery...
O.K., this is extremely weird, just for fun, deleted all my printer AGAIN, (that's about the 6th time!) Re-loaded, but this time, all the installation wizard looked entirely different. And now, everything works, can change my properties with no problem! Keep trying PORTOLA120, just might work for ya, maybe when they come out with "Firefox 10", which should be around x-mas!!!! LOL!!!! Later. (p.s.,not sure, but received an e-mail about a "revision" done by Firefox tech's, maybe they fixed it?)
