By far the most useful feature of Firefox was being able to type in a general term for a web site and being taken straight to that web site. Say I wanted the BBC webiste I simply typed "BBC" into the address bar and hit enter and it would take me straight to "www.BBC.co.uk". Now, with version 4.0, I get the highly irritating AVG search powered by google and I simply can't get rid of it. I don't have AVG installed, I've disabled all add-ons and started Firefox in Safe mode and its still doing it. Please tell me how I can get back the best feature Firefox had over its competition?

To get the Firefox 3.6 behaviour on Firefox 4 you need to change a hidden preference.

  1. Type about:config into the location bar and press enter
  2. Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences
  3. Locate the preference keyword.URL, double-click on it and change its value to the link shown below

If you prefer, you can also do this by installing the Browse by Name extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/browse-by-name
