how prevent Firefox from doing DNS lookups for fxfeeds.mozilla. com and stopbadware.org and lookup up the actual URL instead?

Running Firefox from Ubuntu 10.04LTS on a "stand alone internet". Local education network with no contact to the global internet. Runs own top domian = .local with subdomain .lab.local.

When entering for exampel URL http://www.lab.local (existing and working) Firefox tryies to lookup fxfeeds.mozila.com, than gives up and presents error page. Clearing all automatic update options changes behaviour to instead lookup stopbadware.org before giving up.

Trying with "real" URL like http://www.eit.lth.se, Firefox tries to do DNS lookup for that address immediately.

Try setting browser.safebrowsing.enabled to false see

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.safebrowsing.enabled

If you enter safebrowsing as a filter in about:config there are quite a few options you might meddle with.

I have been more and more convinced that my findings have two sources. One of them has to do with Firefox Safe Browsing. The other has to do with the avahi daemon and its use of .local as root domain.
