How to stop middle mouse from opening link

I use middle mouse button only for scrolling, and activating "scroll compass" . If there is a link I don't want this to open when clicking middle mouse button. Some pages have whole areas (frames?) acting this way (e.g. Wired.com)

Have tried all possible mouse settings in about:config; no solution found.

Any tips are appreciated

Hi, you can try: Type about:config into the address bar, press Enter, accept the warning, scroll down to middlemouse.openNewWindow and double click on it to change 'Value' from True to False, then restart Firefox.

If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you!

I'm not aware of a way to disable the default middle mouse click action and yes it does cause issues if you accidentally middle-click in the wrong place.
