On WinXP FF 43.0.1 runs OK, but the current version (48.0.1) runs very slowly.
FF 48.0.1 is running very slowly on my Windows XP service pack 3 PC.
I did a FF Refresh but no change.
I then uninstalled FF and installed version 43.0.1 (with no added add-ons) and it ran OK. But when I upgraded to the current version (48.0.1) (still with no added add-ons) it runs very slowly. And it fully uses one core of my 2 core CPU when I attempt to do anything using FF, even when accessing the drop-down menus (there were even pauses when I was typing in the details of this question). Since nothing was done between the install of version 43.0.1 and the upgrade to version 48.0.1, the issue points to the new version of FF.
Is this something that can be fixed, or should I go to an earlier version of FF. If I need to go to an earlier version of FF, what is the latest version I should try (beyond 43.0.1) and where do I obtain it?

I would recommend trying the Firefox 45 ESR (Extended Support Release) version, and see if it will install.

I tried FF 45 ESR (45.3.0) on Windows XP and it did install and works (much faster than the latest mainstream version). From the Mozilla Firefox ESR life cycle diagram it appears that there will be support until at least 45.8.0 (2017Q1).
Does this (ESR) support provide full security support as with the mainstream versions?
Will XP be supported in the ESR 52.x stream?
Yes, the ESR version gets the same security fixes as the Release gets.
