These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backup of files that you choose.

You used the Firefox "Reset" feature?

Reset moves your old settings folder, including your extensions and related data, to your desktop, inside a folder named Old Firefox Data. So you can click down into it and look in the old extensions folder.

Problem is, most extensions are named with long "unique IDs" instead of their common names. For example:

NoScript: {73a6fe31-595d-460b-a920-fcc0f8843232}.xpi (archive) FireShot: {0b457cAA-602d-484a-8fe7-c1d894a011ba} (folder)

To see which folders/archives are not present in your current installation of Firefox, you can compare using the Troubleshooting Information page. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Look for the "Extensions" table.

To investigate unknown extensions, you can run those ID's through your favorite search engine and probably find pages associating them with their common names. Or you can open their install.rdf file in a text editor like Notepad, and the common name will be in there.

Once you have the name of the extension, you can get a fresh install from the Add-ons site. This is preferred compared with a local install because it allows Firefox to check for updates. However, if the extension is no longer available, then it might be possible to copy it over to your currently active profile folder. (Please be careful to avoid losing data!)

Any luck?
