I cannot find my bookmarks

Hi:

I am using Firefox 3.6.10 on Windows 7. Today, when I opened up Firefox, all my bookmarks both in the bookmarks menu and on the bookmarks bar were gone. I tried restoring bookmarks, but Firefox was unable to. Then, I deleted the places.sqlite file from my profile, and restoring was successful for my toolbar bookmarks. However, I cannot open any folders in my bookmarks menu, and when I highlight them with my mouse, a small square in the upper-right corner appears. Any idea what I could do? Thanks.
