Unread message count does not update on subfolders

Looking at IMAP mail on a Dovecot server using maildir format, I have numerous subfolders that are populated via procmail. The problem is with Thunderbird: sometimes (but not always, but very often throughout the day) the unread count on the subfolders isn't updated until I click on that subfolder. It's really annoying, and I didn't see this issue with kmail or Evolution (the former was too brittle and the latter... ugh no).

I've tried toggling "Show only subscribed" to no avail. The fact that this seems to happen with no consistency is utterly maddening. How do I debug this?

> Why wouldn't this be the default?

It is a poor default for performance, and low % people use server side filters

As an alternative, see the preference for checking all folders at http://kb.mozillazine.org/How_do_I_check_for_new_messages_in_other_folders#IMAP

all folders are set in thunderbird to check for new mail?

Argh, no. Why wouldn't this be the default? I have to right-click on each folder and change that setting for all of them. Seems like that ought to be the rule rather than the exception.

Fair enough. Thanks for answering the question. I now am getting correct unread message counts for all my folders.
