how to block pop up ads
firefox 24.0 in xp. I continually (about 30 times an hour) get "pop-ups" that has a tab at the top that says "Firefox stopped redirect" or something like that. I still have to waste a click to close the window. How can I get firefox to stop the window from opening. what are other types of pop ups that can be blocked? I have read some on this about some ads cant be blocked.

I think that the issue here may be mere terminology. "Pop up" blocker still blocks old fashioned pop ups. When I look at the page structure I see names like "floater" and "firefly" - that is what I would block. Another, "site ribbon."
When The Washington Times untimely débutted their new appearance, it was largely made of these in-your-face floaters. TWT pulled the new appearance for reevaluation.

if you want stop the ads popups you can set it in your firefox settings: enter in menu->options->select tab contents->and here mark "block popup windows" (also see the screenshot), also you can use ABP addon to block other popup. For your security do also a scan with these antivirus programs:
- Microsoft Safety Scanner
- MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
- TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility
- Hitman Pro
- ESET Online Scanner
Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Hello thebestrealestateguy, for the "redirect" issue go to : Firefox button > Options > Options > Advanced panel > General tab > Accessibility > UNcheck Warn me when websites try to redirect or reload the page [ ]
see : Advanced panel - General tab - Accessibility
thank you
Note that the setting in "Options > Advanced > General" is meant as an accessibility feature, as you can see by the label of that section, so that people with disabilities or people who use screen readers do not get confused and is not meant as a safety protection to stop redirecting.

this does not even come close to addressing pop ups. I get redirect prevented messages all the time but the pop up still pops up telling me fox stopped another redirect. I dont want the pop up at all. I get about 3-5 per minute and it is making surfing intolerable. I dont want the pop ups make me click to get rid of ads. they had pop up blockers before ... do they still have pop up blockers. I want to block not stop a redirect.
@ Nellus91 menu->options->select tab contents->and here mark "block popup windows" is meaningless in my current browser ,
it should say select tools> options >contents tab or just simply contents > check "block popup windows". to say select tab contents is confusing because there is a tabs tab. your screenshot ended the confusion after some frustration.
but the block pop ups is enable and I still get them.
Are this new tabs or windows that open or do you see this notification at the top of the current tab when you open a link? A redirect occurs when you open the link a a new tab and Firefox switches to it and the server sends a location header that the page can be reached by another link. It is possible that multiple redirects are necessary.
If you have pop-up then do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

I have the same problem as well. Pretty much each time I open another tab or go to another window, I am constantly bomb boarded by windows that open up in front of the web site that I want to view. I have tried using an ad block and malware remover, but nothings seems to work. Do you have any other suggestions that may be helpful?

Hi to block pop ups completely here's how:
Disabling all popups in Firefox
Type "about:config" (without the apostrophes) in the browser's address bar and hit the enter key. First time users need to confirm that they be careful on the next page. Type or paste "dom.popup_allowed_events" (without the apostrophes) into the search field. The value of the preference highlights all events that are allowed to spawn popups. Double-click the preference and "REMOVE" some or "ALL" of the items here. You can also add some if you want to do so.
note if you are successful, the next time a pop up comes you can set to disable notification from appearing.
