Migrate emails

more options

We have had our sympatico.ca account for decades, but have recently created a gmail address as we will probably leave Bell, for a number of reasons, and I understand that we will then lose all remaining sympatico emails. We recently switched from Outlook to Thunderbird, but my guess is that we will no longer need Thunderbird, and gmail will be easily transportable, though it has some rather distasteful features, limited storage being one. My question is, is there a way to migrate the emails away from Bell and retain them. This doesn't seem to be a strictly Thunderbird question, though I'm sure it has arisen numerous times in the past. Thanks.

To retain the messages, I assume this is an IMAP account.

  1. click account settings>synchronization&storage and confirm that the accounts can be downloaded
  2. click file>offline>download to ensure that you retrieve all headers and content
  3. install addon, importexporttools NG, if not already done
  4. highlight each account folder, rightclick, select importexport option to export mbox and do so to a windows folder
  5. once done, highlight Local Folders, rightclick, select the importexport option to import mbox for each folder
  6. all folders are now separate from the account and the account can be safely deleted

Comment: Gmail offers 15 gig of free storage, yet you mention that as limited. To my knowledge, that is one of the more generous free accounts. And, you can continue using Thunderbird with Gmail, if desired.
