I requested this feature about 6 months ago and the reply I received referred to "address autocomplete". While this is implemented, it's of limited use if you can't remember the specific email address, or the entry heading for the recipient, but would recognize it when you saw it in the Address-Book. Also adding multiple recipients is awkward, as it requires either clicking "Enter" and auto-typing the additional address, or clicking outside the address-field to set an address, then re-entering the address-field to begin typing an additional address; neither of which is obvious to those new to Thunderbird.

The simple addition of the address-book would solve these issues in a more user friendly format whereby you see all the email addresses and need only use a single key entry to select one, or more addresses. There's also no reason why it couldn't exist with the current address-autocomplete.

Thanks X.

Right you are Toad-Hall; guess I was looking for something that said "Address-Book".

The only minor issue I have it that if you're writing an email, the address book is primary. It would have better human-factors to see an Icon right on the bar next to "Save"; rather than hidden in view under a different name (Contacts) than it appears on the main page "Address Book"

Thanks, X.

The method you are talking about is already available in Thunderbird. It sounds like you are not using the 'Contacts Sidebar', so suggest you enable it. In a 'Write' window 'View' > select 'Contacts sidebar' This allows you to select an address book to see the contacts.

You can select a specific address book to see all contacts and scroll through them or use the search to refine the view. I must admit I do not tend to use the search as it means you need to name or emails, so seeing everything is a bonus. If you select 'All Address Books', You can choose to see names and/or email addresses and also the address book if required.

To insert a name into a TO field, double click on the name. To insert several names, hold down 'Ctrl' and click on various names, then click on the appropraite option eg: 'Add to Cc' button.

Whilst the image below is for an earlier version the process of using the Contacts Sidebar is identical.
