Updating yahoo mail account
I got a message from yahoo mail saying they will no longer support current sign in methods. They give instructions for how to update thunderbird for the new settings, which basically involves deleting the old yahoo account and setting up a new one. Following those instructions results in all of my mailboxes and messages being deleted -- what a brilliant solution! I have years of messages I don't want to lose. Fortunately I had a backup of my .thunderbird directory (this is Linux, thunderbird v. 68.11.0)
See here for how NOT to do this "upgrade": https://help.yahoo.com/kb/new-mail-for-desktop/SLN27791.html?impressions=true Don't follow those instructions or you will lose all of your messages and mailboxes.
So, is there a way I can delete and re-install the account settings using the automatic features yahoo wants, without losing everything?

I do believe that even the Yahoo POP account may be able to use the 'Authentication Method: OAuth'.
So if you prefer to use pop. Get copies put into Local Folders first as previously advised - just in case :) Then recreate an exisitng mail account set up as POP account and then point it to use the old pop account via 'Account Settings' > 'Server Settings' . There is a 'Local directory: text box which points to new account - click on 'Browse' to select old account and then change the Authentication Method: to OAuth in server settings and Outgoing SMTP. Restart Thunderbird. Oauth gets set up. It may still download emails and keep all the old ones.

re : Select 'Outgoing server (SMTP) to see list of outgoing servers Select the Yahoo outgoing server and click on 'Edit' Now I find that there is no "Yahoo outgoing" option.
You appear to have set up several mail accounts and several outgoing servers for those mail accounts. What do you mean 'no outgoing option' ? SMTP is the outgoing server. You have selected the Outgoing server as per image. You are editing the outgoing option. When you click on 'Edit' a small window opens so you can edit the current settings. Current Settings say you are using Authentication Method 'Normal Password' - you want to change that to 'OAuth. The 'Username' should be the email address for the account that uses that smtp server. In 'Description' field, I suggest you edit that so it says 'Yahoo followed by your email address - which is the same info shown in the 'User name' field. AS it helps you to know which smtp outgoing server that mail account is using. I suggest you edit the Description field because you seem to have more than one Yahoo outgoing smtp and it stops confusion. Click on OK to save the settings.
Toad-Hall I have one Yahoo account and one outgoing server that I wish to make such that email will continue. The other one is not used. You said " Select the Yahoo outgoing server". Do you mean " Select "Yahoo mail outgoing server"? Having two Yahoo accounts made it confusing for me
I have not selected the top option in the screen shot, the one with the red arrow. I have highlighted it. I did not know which of the two Yahoo mail options to edit. Now I can see that the edit screens have the name of the email, and the one I need to edit is at the top.
So, select edit, change to Oauth2 OK Back to the Outgoing server screen, select OK I have not done this and am just outlining the steps I will take as soon as a few points are clarified.
You said to revoke an app password. I followed the Yahoo advice at https://help.yahoo.com/kb/generate-third-party-passwords-sln15241.html and got to Account security. From there I went to the screen below. On 4 September I set up a new password, the yellow box, but it seems that this has not been completed. This password is in the form AlphanumeriC1234 and not aaa bbb ccc ddd. Is it necessary to revoke this password?
The red box at the bottom is not the Yahoo email. It's one of mine and seems to be the recovery email or the like. If so the heading seems to be incorrect.
Thank you for your patience. Time was when I could make the command line dance, and before that punched cards were a lot of fun. Everything was precise. Now Yahoo and other companies give vague and incorrect information. Starting the flawed Yahoo method has not assisted, and neither has my lack of familiarity with the process.
PLEASE NOTE; If you do not want to recreate all your message filters, copy your yahoo folder to another place. After you re-add your account copy the msgFilterRules.dat file to the new yahoo folder and overwrite the new file. Restart TB. I had to do it a couple times. The first time it restored the new one. Don't know why, so don't move the old file, COPY it.
I followed yahoo's authentication advice on thunderbird. Once completed one of my two thunderbird folders disappeared. What a disservice by yahoo!!!
I have back-up folders of it. But how can I get it back into thunderbird so that it's working? Can anyone help me out with that, please?
Did you have IMAP or POP previously? Is it the same now? Which folders did you backup?
It sounds like you may have been using a POP acct. Otherwise, it would still be on the server and be restored. I which case you would copy the popmail folder (not sure of exact name as I use IMAP).
If it were IMAP, the folder would be there since it would be on the server.
Make sure you backup the new folders, just in case you overwrite something that shouldn't be overwritten.

Hi Bill,
Thank you for your message.
Re your questions:
I'm not sure but I think I had POP previously. HOW can I find that out?
I think it is not IMAP. HOW can I find that out?
When I go into thunderbird's 'troubleshooting information' page and scroll down to the 'Mail and News Accounts' section it lists two accounts:
'account1' named '(none) 'Local Folders' using a 'Normal password' 'account3' named '(imap) imap.mail.yahoo.com:993' using 'Oauth2' authentication
Obviously the second account is the one that got activated after the yahoo authentication. It's the default account. But the first one is probably what I had prior.
I have off-line back-up service that backs up all folders.
I looked at the folders on my computer. There is a pop.mail.yahoo.com folder which seems to contain the missing folder/data right up to the date when I did the yahoo authentication that made it all disappear in thunderbird.
Bill, do you know what I need to do next? How exactly, step by step (because I don't want to screw up more stuff), do I get that data back into my thunderbird account?
Thank you again!

It looks like your previous connection was POP since you have this "pop.mail.yahoo.com folder" And your current connection is IMAP since you have this 'account3' named '(imap) imap.mail.yahoo.com:993' using 'Oauth2' authentication
The problem is all your previous emails were downloaded to you and deleted from the server and are in the pop.mail.yahoo.com folder.
Your current config is IMAP and everything will stay on the server until you empty your trash. Only the headers get uploaded to your computer. The actual email is not unless you save it to your computer.
I just saved an email to an EML file and when I double clicked it, it opened in TB.
If you dbl clk the emails in your POP folder, that may work. Otherwise, you will need to figure out how to open those files. Google "open email files". There are many ideas there.
You can create the folder in your current setup and go on from there. That won't get the emails back into that folder. You can then try to import the emails from your backup. I don't know if that will work either. You can change your account to a POP account and copy the emails into the newly created POP folder. It has been so long since I have had POP that I do not remember what I did when I changed it.
IMAP has these advantages: all your emails are stored on the server you can access them from multiple devices at the same time Organization happens on the server so when you change something on one device, it is propagated to all devices. disadvantages: you must be online to access your email.
POP are stored on your computer. Accessing them from multiple devices presents an organization problem. Deleting an email from one device does not delete it from the other devices. Organizing them into folders requires it to be done on each device. Responses to emails is not propagated to other devices.
