I am running quite happily, but get security reminders from Google that I am allowing insecure apps to access Google.

If I change the setting to secure, I don't get access any more.

I don't mind Thunderbird having access this way, but I don't particularly want it open to other insecure apps.

Is Thunderbird looking at this security issue?

Thunderbird created the Authentication Method of OAuth2 over a year ago to comply with Gmail's ridiculous claim that the whole world is Less Secure than they are. You might try making that change to your server settings. You will need to do it with both the IMAP and the SMTP servers. If using POP, gmail does not support OAuth2. You will have to uncheck Less Secure Apps at the gmail site and continue to use Normal Password.
