Memory spikes to 12GB in a few seconds when attempting to access this website on 19 Apr 2018, before 11:00am CDT:

https://www.theguardian.com/us

The page never loads, and I have to use the task manager to kill FF. At that same time, Chrome handled it with no problems.

Sometime after 11:00am, something changed, and the page loaded immediately, with no huge memory consumption.

Is there some way to track or log enough information to pinpoint the problem?

I opened the link but saw no problem. It might have been a problem with the website that was repaired.

After 11am I saw it load correctly as well. But what sort of website problem would cause FF to jump from 500mb to 12gb in a few seconds. There should be some sort of protection built in to FF to prevent this.

This isn't the first time I've seen this happen. Every two or three weeks I have to kill FF with task manager.

Is that with the same website or others as well? It does sound like a website issue.

I'm afraid I can't say one way or the other. As I said, it doesn't happen that often--it may be weeks till the next occurrence, and once it happens FF is essentially dead. I don't think it's the website per se, because I can access the website in chrome without a problem at the same time FF is choking.

But to my original question, is there some kind of logging I can enable so that the next time it happens, there might be a way to track the problem?

I called for more help.

I noticed there were no players on the page I was. Sometimes the player can cause that issue.

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web Link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for a good ad / pop-up blocker.
