Thunderbird updated to 52.2.0 and I hate it! All of a sudden when I open Thunderbird I have to click the In-Box so that it will show me all me all the folders. And then when I click the folders my sorting options are gone! This is extremely annoying and not something I want to have to deal with every time I open Thunderbird. I hope there is a way to fix this.

Start Thunderbird in Safe mode. Does it work any better? You do this from the Help Menu.

This does nothing. at all. I have no add-ons and starting in safe mode made no difference. This wasn't a problem until the recent update.

Do you use CCleaner software?

Yes I do is it clashing with something in the new update?

Also every time I open Thunderbird now it seems to be downloading every single message into every single folder. It never did that before.

CCleaner issued a bad upgrade starting 2 days ago. It corrupts the Thunderbird profile. It has been recommended for a long time now to tell CCleaner to leave the Thunderbird files alone. They have no idea what they are doing and usually make a mess. There is a discussion over at the CCleaner forum about this mess. You might want to visit that forum for help.

Never had issues with CCleaner premium, never had it do anything with Thunderbird either. Again I didn't have issues until Thunderbirds last update. But thanks.

On Thursday there were 2 dozen people posting that they lost everything. We found that CCleaner was the common item. Within a couple of hours CCleaner issued a patch upgrade.

Here is the forum thread. https://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=48428

I looked at the thread that's not the issue I'm having. My viewing preferences are resetting every time I open Thunderbird my data is fine, CCleaner is not the issue. Every time I reopen Thunderbird the inbox collapses and I have to click it to show my folders, I did not have to do that before. I also have to resort all my folders to view by date descending. It's not saving these. I've seen one other person with the sorting issue and his problem wasn't solved either.

And it seems to be downloading messages all over again, the data is there it's downloading it anyway. Since the last update Thunderbird is slow and now it's frozen. Do not direct me to the piriform thread again that is not the issue I have. Once again I have never had an issue with it but I've had several with Thunderbird lately.

I run the latest formal release of Thunderbird, and very often beta versions and I don't see the changes you complain about. I simply do not encounter the problems you report.

CCleaner is a nuisance. By default it deletes certain necessary json files. In this case they produced a broken version that irreparably removes or damages yet another essential file (prefs.js).

I wouldn't let CCleaner anywhere near my machine. If you must use it, set it to exclude Thunderbird's (and Firefox's) profile folders from its machinations.

The first step in fixing a bug is to identify a series of steps to allow anyone else to reproduce that bug. Then you can report it. But if you can not demonstrate that it happens in the absence of known trouble-causing third party programs your bug will be dismissed.

I guess you know best. Good luck.

I have never let CCleaner get into Thunderbird. I don't understand what's so hard to understand about the fact that every time I open Thunderbird it has lost all my viewing preferences.

It's collapsing all my folders into the inbox and it's sorting everything in ascending rather than descending. It wasn't doing this before the last Thunderbird update.

This is far from first problem I've had with this mail client. Glad I never donated. Solution: new mail client.
