Why does the UI freeze during what should be background tasks like checking e-mail on the server?

Often when I am in the middle of typing a reply, the cursor freezes, the application no longer accepts keystrokes, and the UI "locks up" -- as far as I can tell, this happens when Firefox decides it is time to check the server for new e-mail messages.

I would think that checking the server for new messages should be work performed in a background task, and not cause the UI to "Freeze"?

Are there any settings I can adjust to ameliorate this?

What you describe sounds like the computers CPU is overworked.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).

Is the problem still there?
