In safe mode does it occur the same way?

Thanks Matt, Followed your instruction and opened Thunderbird in Safe mode. Can attach files to a new message in safe mode. Have now closed Thunderbird again and re-opened, and it appears that I can now add attachments when composing messages. Many thanks.
