Surprised by the horrible FF29 update, I tried system restore, and it completely obliterated my install. Is there an easy way to repair this?

I wasn't pleased with the auto-update to 29. So I figured I'd roll back to 28 until I had more time to look into the various quirks and whatnot of the new update. Well, in my haste, I didn't really research the best way of doing this and opted for a system restore.

Now my browser install is completely effed. It won't launch at all, and when I attempt to uninstall (via the app or by using the control panel) it does absolutely nothing. Is there (simply) some new file that is causing this problem (and can be removed)? Or is the entire install wrecked? Since uninstalling doesn't seem to be working, will I need to re-install over the top of it? Will I have to go in and manually pull files/folders in order to re-install?

What are my options?

What's the purpose of renaming the folder? Will it interfere with the re-install? If so, why not just delete it?

I actually gave you the wrong instructions:

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

WARNING: Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!

Well... I actually just renamed the folder, per your first post (now deleted).

It worked so... I guess now I'll delete the folder I renamed.

Is there anything that would have changed in this process (settings under "options", saved data, about:config stuff, etc etc etc) or is everything contained in the profile folder?

I noticed the "Update History" (tools>options>advanced>update) was empty now and wondered if anything else will pop-up that's been changed.
