I'm running Windows 7 SP1 and Firefox 7.0.1. Since I've updated Firefox, nothing that I do will make Google search results automatically open in a new tab.

I've checked my Google settings and everything is as it should be there. I've even typed about:config into the address bar and made sure that the value for browser.search.openintab was set to "true." Still no luck. What can I do?

Hmmm, this seems to be going around. Two other threads active today, but no solution yet:

Tabbed Browsing not working with Google search

Google search results won't open in a new window

When was the last time it was working for you -- version 6.0.2 or version 7.0?

I don't recall exactly when it worked last. It was sometime within the last 2 days, I believe.

The temporary workaround is to hold the Ctrl key when clicking, or middle-click. Both will open the linked page in a new tab.

To have that tab become active immediately, instead of opening behind your other tabs:

orange Firefox button or Tools menu > Options > Tabs

Check the box for: "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately"

Thanks. I'm aware of the middle-click option. It's just frustrating because I had become so used to having search results open in a new tab automatically. Now I have to retrain my brain! ;)

Did you make sure that the Google search settings haven't changed and that that setting is still selected?

You can verify that by clicking the gear icon in the top right corner.

That was the first thing that I looked at. I even unchecked it, then checked it again.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Suddenly the problem seems to have fixed itself.
