I have some favicon that are missing or wrong.

I saw that there is an extension that will reveal the cashed icon but that doesn't help. Some icons are for local locations (Synology NASs) and the cashe extension just doesn't work; it reveals no icon to save.

I also saw that they are saved in some database somewhere, and the post gave a name for that database, but no location is revealed in any post and I didn't find it in a basic windows search of the Firefox programs folder. Where does the mythical database live?

I have also seen that there are some additional extensions from 7+ years ago but all of those pages se are dead.

Are favicons still a thing? How to I find and save them locally? Going to a website is a non-starter in some cases (e.g. 192.168.0.100 has no favicon file but the saved short cut does have one, so where did it come from and where was it saved to?).

Where do I go to set them so they are not wrong or the default globe?

Failing that, how do I turn favicons off because they are clearly not working correctly.

The favicons are stored in favicons.sqlite in the Firefox profile folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page (Root directory).

Do you see the correct favicon if you open such a bookmark in a new tab ?

This could be a problem with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use the "Places Database" -> "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

If errors are reported with "Verify Integrity", close and restart Firefox or reboot and retry.

Note that you need to reload/visit bookmarked pages if a new favicons.sqlite is created.

The site icon is probably listed on the Media tab of the Page Info window which you get with ctl+i. There is a Save as button so you can save the icon on your computer. To use it in bookmarks and tabs you would need a file userChrome.css.

The tab icon is displaying correctly. Only the favorite from the bar is wrong.

I ran the integrity check and will restart.

Problem is I'm not sure how I logged into this forum. The password doesn't seem to be in my keeper.

I knew about that window for scrapping images but didn't think about the icon. Thanks for reminding me.

If you don't hear from me again, thanks for the help.
