Greetings.

Whenever I click on a link to Facebook, the page manipulates the browser history, effectively disabling the back button by adding multiple instances of the same page. I read that Google addressed this issue with Chrome a while back, but I don't find anything about a fix for Firefox. Is there one?

Thank in advance. Bill

Try right-clicking the back button and select from there.

Hi Bill, does this sound like the issue:

The first page you loaded from the site redirected to a second page. When you go back one step to the first page, the redirect runs again.

I'm not aware of a way to avoid that, but Fred listed the simplest workaround.

Thanks for your quick responses.

I think I just figured it out! I believe it was automatically opening Facebook pages in a Facebook Container Tab, but rather than creating a new tab, it was taking over the current one and wiping out the history. I removed the Facebook Container Tab option and that seems to work.

Aha, good detective work.

Here's what happens: if you click a link to Facebook in a regular tab, then Facebook container grabs the URL to open in a container tab and closes the original tab. To restore the original tab, you would need to either:

  • Use the Ctrl+Shift+T keyboard shortcut
  • Right-click a tab on the tab bar > Undo Close Tab
  • Use the "Recently Closed Tabs" list on the History menu (either menu bar => history, or menu button => Library => History, or Library toolbar button => History)

Thanks for the follow-up explanation! Very helpful.

Stay well. Bill
