Many of my files in Email won't open, I'm guessing because there is not enough room to juggle the files around. I get an error message 'message may contain a virus or there is not enough disk space.' I have plenty of disc space. That message shows even trying to send/receive to myself. I suspect I need to increase the size of my Sent Folder. The accumulated archives go back to the 1990s.... and no, I don't want to get rid of them. Can I get into the defaults to make those files larger?

Hi, Thunderbird Guys,

I'm hoping you can help me understand the underlying set-up of folder sizes. I've got about 0.5Gigabytes available. I can't swear this is what is slowing things down, but I'd like to understand anyway.... sticking my head under the hood.

I'm assuming all the original info ported over from the other list.

What is your account type - POP or IMAP?

Can you post a screenshot of the error message? http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-create-screenshot-my-problem

I have a poorly set up two-account system where server one asks me for a password and won't accept it, then on the other account server two asks me for a different password. The passwords ARE different. so I think Thunderbird stores that last password entered and tries to use it on the other account. when I'm off doing other things, like answering emails already downloaded, the account one will download on it's own; also if I shut then open the program it usually downloads upon start-up. they were both POP accounts, but I attempted to change one to IMAP...I don't think it worked because the emails seem to be left on the server. why does file size care whether what it feeding it comes either IMAP or POP3?

re : they were both POP accounts, but I attempted to change one to IMAP

you cannot just chnage one to imap. You would have to create a new existing mail account for the imap.

Have you considered Archiving your Sent folder, so that it has few emails in it.

For the POP mail account: set up Archiving Options then archive the emails in the Sent folder. Archived emails will still be visible via the Archive folder.

'Tools' > 'Account settings' >'Copies & folders' for the mail account or right click on mail account in Folder Pane and select : Settings' then select Copies & folders' for the mail account.

Message Archives

  • select 'Keep messages archives in'
  • select 'Archives folder on' and the mail account name
  • click on 'Archive Options' button

select 'Monthly archived folders'. (this archives by year and month) select : 'Keep existing folder structure of archived messages' click on OK click on OK

To archive one email: select Sent folder to see emails. click on first email in list, it will display in Message Pane. click on 'Archive' button.

If you want to archive all the emails in the Sent folder: click on first email in list, it will display in Message Pane. Press 'Ctrl' key and 'A' key - this highlights all emails click on 'Archive' button.

After archiving right click on 'Sent' folder and select 'Compact' to make sure any previously deleted emails are completely removed.

This will leave you with an empty or virtually empty Sent folder.

eg: All Archived 2015 January sent emails will be here:

Archives > 2015 >> 2015-01 >>>> Sent
