I'm writing a table and Firefox doesn't render it correctly:

<table border="1" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width='270'>
  <tr>
    <td width='20'>&nbsp;</td>
    <td width='3' height='172'></td>
    <td colspan='2' width='226'>226x172</td>
    <td width='8' height='172'></td>
    <td width='13'>&nbsp;</td>
  </tr>
  <tr>
    <td width='20'>&nbsp;</td>
    <td width='3' height='26'></td>
    <td width='136' height='26'>136x26</td>
    <td colspan='2' width='98' height='26'>98x26</td>
    <td width='13'>&nbsp;</td>
  </tr>
</table>

the 4th cell of the 2nd and 3rd row, infact, are rendered with same size while they are not.

This HTML code render correctly:

<table border="1" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width='270'>
  <tr>
    <td width='20' height='1'></td>
    <td width='3'></td>
    <td width='136'></td>
    <td width='90'></td>
    <td width='8'></td>
    <td width='13'></td>
  </tr>
  <tr>
    <td width='20'>&nbsp;</td>
    <td width='3' height='172'></td>
    <td colspan='2' width='226'>226x172</td>
    <td width='8' height='172'></td>
    <td width='13'>&nbsp;</td>
  </tr>
  <tr>
    <td width='20'>&nbsp;</td>
    <td width='3' height='26'></td>
    <td width='136' height='26'>136x26</td>
    <td colspan='2' width='98' height='26'>98x26</td>
    <td width='13'>&nbsp;</td>
  </tr>
</table>

Can someone explain me why?

The wrong html is:

< table border="1" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width='270'>

 < tr>
   < td width='20'> </td>
   < td width='3' height='172'></td>
   < td colspan='2' width='226'>226x172</td>
   < td width='8' height='172'></td>
   < td width='13'> </td>
 < /tr>
 < tr>
   < td width='20'> </td>
   < td width='3' height='26'></td>
   < td width='136' height='26'>136x26</td>
   < td colspan='2' width='98' height='26'>98x26</td>
   < td width='13'> </td>
 </tr>

</table>

While the good one is: < table border="1" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width='270'>

 < tr>
   < td width='20' height='1'></td>
   < td width='3'></td>
   < td width='136'></td>
   < td width='90'></td>
   < td width='8'></td>
   < td width='13'></td>
 < /tr>
 < tr>
   < td width='20'> </td>
   < td width='3' height='172'></td>
   < td colspan='2' width='226'>226x172</td>
   < td width='8' height='172'></td>
   < td width='13'> </td>
 < /tr>
 < tr>
   < td width='20'> </td>
   < td width='3' height='26'></td>
   < td width='136' height='26'>136x26</td>
   < td colspan='2' width='98' height='26'>98x26</td>
   < td width='13'> </td>
 </tr>

</table>
