Icons fwd, bak, refresh, X are all grey. Unloaded & reloaded, still grey. ???

The only icon that is blue is the home icon. Everything to the left is gray and not active. However, when I browsed the help items all turned blue except stop (X). When I exited help all but the home icon turned gray again. I've removed Firefox, shut down, reloaded, and the problem is the same. HP laptop, Vista, Comcast, Norton I have also tried View, toolbars, custom, restore settings. NADA
