Want to de-Alphabetize (disable sort by name) bookmarks in a folder

I have the latest version of Firefox for Windows 10. I accidentally sorted my bookmarks by name (hundreds of them in a folder called Other Bookmarks) and want to go back to unsorted...but no matter what I do, even if I check the "unsorted" option, the bookmarks stay in the "sort by name" alphabetized mode.

How do I fix this?

Thank you

Nick

On the menu bar of the bookmarks manager, try clicking Organize and then Undo.

If that option isn't available, you may be able to restore your bookmarks from a backup. On the menu bar of the bookmarks manager, click Import and Backup and then select an option under Restore.

Keep in mind that the sort order in the library window is for viewing purposes within the bookmarks manager only. That is, any sorting you do via Views and then Sort won't apply to the bookmarks button or menu (but right-clicking and then clicking Sort by Name does, as you found out).

Hi,

Thank you for responding. The undo option is grayed out.

When I restored my bookmarks with import and back up…the “unsorted” bookmarks are ok for maybe 10 seconds and then, all of a sudden without me doing anything, they “sort by name”. It’s as if the “sort by name” setting is stuck and I can undo it.

On my laptop, the bookmarks (similar to my PC) are unsorted…but on the PC, which I accidentally activated “sort by name” is the problem. It seems that on my PC version of Firefox, the “sort by name” mode is stuck.

I’m just wondering if I should try to import my laptop bookmarks to my PC and see what happens?

Thanks,

Nick

Are you restoring the most recent backup available? If you try restoring from an older backup (a day or so prior to sorting by name) does it still sort the restored bookmarks by name?

The backup I restored was saved quite some time before the problem occurred. When I restored it, the names were in the unsorted mode...about 10 seconds later they changed to "sort by name."

What I plan to do is save my "unsorted" bookmarks from my laptop to a flash drive and import them to my PC Firefox to see what happens.

Does that make sense?

This still does not address the basic issue of turning of (disabling) "sort by name" and replacing that setting with "Unsorted" and the bookmarks revert to the "unsorted" setting. Other people have complained about this Firefox issue.

Did you install an extension that sorts the bookmarks automatically ?

Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or if userChrome.css/userContent.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the Default System theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Troubleshoot Mode start window

Hi,

I solved the problem. I deleted all the bookmarks I had in Firefox. I then uninstalled Firefox as completely as I could. I reinstalled Firefox and refreshed it. I then went to bookmarks>manage bookmarks>views>sort and checked "unsorted" I then went to the bookmarks>manage bookmarks>import & backup>restore In the restore mode, I saw that I had previous versions of my bookmarks saved by date I picked a date about 1 month before the "sort by name" problem started and restored those bookmarks That restored my bookmarks (minus a few) to the "unsorted" mode

Thank you for all your suggestions.
