There are a number of threads/articles on this, such as: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1341031

They don't include that if "Clear History when Firefox is Closed" is checked, that even though settings are set to open previous tabs, everything is lost. There are options for that setting but it has wiped out my previous sessions a few times with no recovery available. I have always forgotten which setting does that even when it happens, so am hoping the threads/articles will be updated to include it for fixing the problem. It seems these settings are in conflict though and not clear. If Open Previous Windows and Tabs is set to on, I think it should override wiping people's tabs out in other settings that are buried or not as intuitive.

Session data is about (browsing) history, so do not use "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear the "Browsing history".

  • using "Clear history when Firefox closes" in Firefox 102+ honors exceptions and keeps cookies with an allow exception, previous versions removed all cookies
  • clearing "Site settings" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exceptions for passwords and other website specific data

Don't understand your response. But in Google, history and cookies can be cleared when exiting yet the setting to open with last session still works.

This is only an issue with restoring a session when you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear the browsing history, clearing history otherwise is okay.

"This is only an issue with restoring a session when you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" "

That was my point, for the purpose of including this issue in resolutions. There are multiple threads/articles about this problem but none of them mention this situation as a cause, so a resolution, to avoid it. It's time consuming to happen and figure out.

If "Open Previous Windows and Tabs" is set, I think it should override wiping them all out. At the least, a message could be displayed noting the settings conflict to confirm whether someone wants to clear their session and that no recovery will be available if they do. Not sure why such a conflict would be allowed in the first place.

Backup history of multiple previous sessions would be nice, too, in the event things get wiped out.

I lost a large number of windows and tabs with no way back and it is not the first time.
