I’m having trouble with images getting blocked in Firefox (Version 71.0; running Win 10 1903, latest update), particularly when viewing emails from Outlook.com, and particularly for emails that come from Mail Chimp. These graphics load perfectly fine in other browsers I’ve tried (Google Chrome, MS Edge). In Firefox, the email comes through and I can view it, but all the graphics are broken.

According to your directions (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-page-info-window) there should be an option in the Permissions to “Load Images”. However, that option does not appear for ANY website. Also, note that the box to block images is NOT checked in the Page Info tab for Outlook.com (or any other website).

Is there another setting somewhere, in Firefox or in Windows 10, that allows the Permissions option for “Load Images” to even appear in Firefox?

Hi Moxhelp, the whole image blocking feature is being phased out and handed over to add-ons. We are in transition.

When you are on a page with blocked images, you can use the Page Info dialog to check whether that is a stored preference for the source site. Here's how:

Either:

  • right-click a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info
  • (menu bar) Tools menu > Page Info

Along the top, click the Media icon.

In the list box full of image URLs, click the first one and glance toward the preview area. Just above that is a checkbox to block images from the source site. If it's blocked, un-check it.

Use the down arrow to scan though the list and clear any blocked sources.

If that didn't make any difference consider whether it could be Content Blocking/Tracking Protection, or one of your add-ons.

Double-check content blockers: Firefox's Content Blocking feature and extensions that counter ads and tracking may break websites that embed third party content (meaning, from a secondary server).

(A) Do you see a shield icon toward the left end of the address bar, near the lock icon? More info on managing the Tracking Protection feature in this article: Enhanced Tracking Protection in Firefox for desktop.

(B) Extensions such as Adblock Plus, Blur, Disconnect, Ghostery, NoScript, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin or uMatrix should provide toolbar buttons to manage blocked content in a page. There may or may not be a number on the icon indicating the number of blocked items; you may need to click the button to see what's going on and test whether you need to make an exception for this site.

Testing in Firefox's Safe Mode: In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

I will have to check out the possibility of add-ons causing trouble.

But that still doesn't answer why I have no option in the Preferences for "Load Images". or is that what you meant by "the whole image blocking feature is being phased out and handed over to add-ons. We are in transition."

Has "Load Images" already been pulled out of Preferences?

Yes, "Load Images" is gone from the Permissions panel in Firefox 71 (as you noticed).

You can check in the Web Console for possible messages about blocked content.

I started Mozilla in Safe Mode and this fixed the problem. I them started it in normal mode and disabled all of my add-ons one-by-one. Even after all were disabled however, the problem is still there. Does this suggest that it's not an add-on causing the problem?

I then followed your suggestion Cor-el and checked the Web Console. For all the blocked graphics, there's a line stating "The resource at .... was blocked because content blocking is enabled." Most of these are from "https://gallery.mailchimp.com/", or "https://cdn-images.mailchimp.com/". There are also some blocked from "....list-manage.com...."

What's the best way to deal with this? I'd prefer to not turn off tracking protection for all of outlook.com (interestingly, when I click on the shield icon next to the address, there is now an option to turn off "enhanced tracking protection" for this site. This wasn't there when I first posted this problem and I'm still running the same version of Mozilla, v71.0).

Is there a way to 'white-list' mailchimp, or the specific senders that are using mailchip, or something else, to prevent the graphics from being blocked for only the problem emails? Thanks!
