Only issue w/FF I have is it always loses my 'top sites' tabs/thumbnails as well as bookmarks. Up to a point. It remembers one tab and older bookmarks. But even w/in a few hours it blanks out anything new.

Even if my one Add-on is disabled (uBlock Origin). Interestingly when it does this it will only show all history folder for July, nothing since. Add-on 'New Tab Override' does not look like what I want to use.

I believe the solution might be under Options>Privacy & Security under Cookies & Site data, where I need to set an exception for firefox/mozilla b/c I have checked 'Accept cookies, keep until close FF'. But I don't know what exception is.

If that sounds correct I'd appreciate anyone's help, or if you think of something else I can try.

Thank you,

Mac

HI, please test for awhile in : SAFE MODE

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
  • default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder)
  • default toolbar layout is used (file: localstore-safe.rdf)
  • Javascript JIT compilers are disabled (prefs: javascript.options.*jit)
  • hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected

TEST''''is issue still there ?

Hi Mac, the addresses for Top Sites on the built-in new tab page are stored locally in preferences (the prefs.js file), so you don't need to any any cookie exception for it. The thumbnail data gets updated now and then; I don't know if there are any settings that would clear it.

This article covers some reasons users might have problems with the prefs.js file losing data: How to fix preferences that won't save.

You definitely should not lose bookmarks! What is the pattern there? You add a bookmark, it's there where you added for some period of time, and then it's gone, either when you close/open Firefox, or after midnight, or is it more random?

Do you have your Firefox set up with Sync? You could consider disconnecting that (on the Options page) to see whether it is the culprit for losing bookmarks.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page
close and restart Firefox in case errors are reported and retry

See also:

If "Verify Integrity" on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page cannot repair places.sqlite then remove all places.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

So Safe Mode doesn't solve. jscher2000 the problem w/losing bookmarks is same timeline as the 'tabs', I may get them to "stick" for half a day or longer. But next day or even 6 hours later I open FF again and only July bookmarks are there.

I don't have FF set to Sync w/anything. I'll have to look into the prefs.js file and Cor-el's tips tomorrow. I'll post asap.

Thank you,

Mac

The Refresh FF button from jscher200's link seems to have worked. I'll try it again tomorrow. Seems to have solved it.

Thanks everyone. Appreciate all your help.

Unfortunately FF is doing it again. Losing bookmarks w/is seriously hampering my work. Since I've tried Safe Mode and the button I think I'll try the .js file fix from jscher2000 next. But not tonite. I'll post back tomorrow.
