shockwave flash crashes
Hi I am in the same situation as many others I have seen posting here. Shockwave flash is continually crashing to the extent it takes several minutes to get to the add-ons manager and disable shockwave flash. I have reinstalled all adobe plugins, so they are up to date. I am having real problems accessing a lot of web pages/web page content because with shockwave flash enabled firefox is all but frozen and with shockwave flash disabled a lot of web content isn't available.
I have looked at other threads that I found and have attempted all of the suggested solutions and have selected the Troubleshooting Information option below this text box. I have a huge list of crash reports, unfortunately I am not sure how to load them
Any suggestions appreciated
Regards.

We're sorry to hear that Firefox is crashing. In order to assist you better, please follow the steps below to provide us crash IDs to help us learn more about your crash.
- Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
- Copy the 5 most recent Report IDs that start with bp- and then go back to your forum question and paste those IDs into the "Post a Reply" box.
Note: If a recent Report ID does not start with bp- click on it to submit the report.
(Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the IDs. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like.)
Thank you for your help!
More information and further troubleshooting steps can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.

Hi Thanks for the responses. The crash reports starting with bp make up a tiny proportion of the crash report list. Also; "Note: If a recent Report ID does not start with bp- click on it to submit the report." To the right of the list are corresponding dates and times with the heading "Date Submitted" does this mean these reports have already been submitted or do I need to click each one to submit it (there's lots and lots of them)?

Your System Details shows; Installed Plug-ins Video WithOut Flash 2.0.2 ([email protected]) Not Flash
Hi FredMcD Over the last few days I have removed and reinstalled the Shockwave flash plugin a number of times. I currently have Shockwave Flash 16.0.0.257 and something called Shockwave for Director 12.1.6.156 installed but (because I need to use the computer I have set them to "Never Active"). I tried installing Video WithOut Flash 2.0.2 as a desperate attempt to get some function back (it did help a bit :-) ).
Regards.
Opps... Looks guilty and recites the old adage, If all else fails read the Beeping instructions.
Ok, my bad :-( I thought the crash reports were already submitted and didnt click them before I went looking for bp prefix. Consequently, I only uploaded the ones that already had bp. I had go at loading another 5 but they are only entered as text without an associated link.
In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers, click it and select Submit.
Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.

Very good. Now then . . . . .
The crash report flagged these programs;
Signature hang
Process Type plugin Shockwave Flash Version:16.0.0.257
If you have problems with current Shockwave Flash plugin versions then check this:
- see if there are updates for your graphics drive drivers
https://support.mozilla.org/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration
- disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
https://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493#TemporaryWorkaround
- disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/891337 See also:
Thanks for your patience.
I noticed the crash reports had an "Install Time" of 2015-01-14 03:10:33. Is the crash report Install Time indicating the offending process installation date (in this case, the process type was listed as Shockwave Flash)?
My system records the Shockwave Flash install date as 2015-01-20.

Hi Phew that was hard... Make a change, go to add-ons manager, activate shockwave flash and crash.... :-(
The graphics drivers are up to date, I tested Shockwave and no improvement. Protected mode is now disabled, another test and crash. Hardware acceleration Flash plugin is now disable. This was difficult, I cant use the browser with Shockwave flash activated so I added DisableHardwareAcceleration=1 in the Flash mms.cfg file.
So, no improvement yet, although I did learn a little bit :-), are there any further suggestions?
Thanks for the help so far
Regards. Fred.
I've called the big guys to help you. Good luck.
Tyler Downer has replied to a thread you're watching. Here is their reply:
Hey all, Just an update. A 0day exploit has been discovered in Flash, 16.0.0.257 and below. Adobe has released an update to 16.0.0.287 which fixes this issue. All users should update to the latest flash immediately. It isn't known how far back this hold exists, but at this time assume all versions are affected.
Hi I have updated Shockwave Flash to 16.0.0.287, alas it is still crashing...
The only difference I can see is the absence of something called Shockwave for Directors (or something to that effect). Previously, when I reinstalled Shockwave I would have to uninstall both the Shockwave Flash and Shockwave for Directors and then when I reinstalled Shockwave, both would return. With the latest update only Shockwave Flash was loaded.
I am at a loss about this, does anyone have a suggestion or two.
Regards. Fred

So far Safe Mode was not suggested, however disabling acceleration has already been tried. Could it possibly be one of the add ons that you have installed in this profile? From the crashes there are about 5, but if you start Firefox while holding Shift, it should put you in safe mode.
Does it crash then as well?
Try to uninstall and reinstall Flash
You can uninstall the current Flash player version and (re)install the latest Flash version.
See this about uninstalling Flash players:
Note that this will remove all installed Flash players.
You can find the latest Flash player versions for Firefox on this page:
Hi Again, thanks for the replies
Unfortunately, the problem still exists. Starting Firefox in safe mode resulted in the same error and reinstalling with the method suggested by cor_el didn't change the fault..
To say that I am puzzled would be an understatement. Over the years I have had Shockwave flash problems before (high cpu load, freezing) but in those cases it was still functioning and the problems were resolvable. Now Shockwave wont even run and when I am brave (foolish) enough to activate the plugin, it freezes all of Firefox and continually gives error messages that it has stopped working or is busy etc. I have had the occasional message telling me something to the effect that the plugin has an error... with options for debugging script.
So at this point I am open to all suggestions, hopefully something will identify the problem.
Regards
Fred
Install this add-on. It will not cure the problem, but you will be on-line.
Flash block {web link} Never be annoyed by a Flash animation again! Blocks Flash so it won't get in your way, but if you want to see it, just click on it
Hi FredMcD Thanks for the suggestion, my goal is to get flash working again rather than disable it which I can do by going to the Add-ons Manager>Plugins page and select Never Active. The issue is simply that with flash active, Firefox freezes, so I am currently trying to operate without flash (it is amazing how many web sites use flash).
Regards
Fred.

With Flash Block, you don't have to change any settings. Also, the web pages load faster without flash windows. After, you can start the player when you want. This is also a good way to check if something else on the web page is causing problems.
