How do I set print margins in Firefox 17 on Linux?
How can I set print margins in Firefox 17 on Linux? There are no margin setings in Page Setup, or in the print dialog. In about:config, there are sets of settings called e.g. printer_Print_to_File.print_margin_top etc. as well as print.printer_Print_to_File.print_margin_top etc., but when I try to set these it seems they reset to 0.5 when I print something, and the printed margins are always the same. In previous versions of Firefox I have managed to set the margins using about:config, but that changed in a recent version.
Chosen solution
Hi,
I can confirm that I have the same issue on Firefox 17 on Linux. Except that the preferences do /not/ get reset back to 0.5.
We could try to isolate the problem. If you have another printer to try then you might want to try it out and see whether the margin settings also get ignored. (It might be just the PDF printer that ignores them.)
On the other side, if this PDF printer worked for you before, please file a Firefox bug. https://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Bug_writing_guidelines
Thanks!

Choose "File" (it's in the menu in the top left corner of your browser), then go to "Page setup..". then click on the second tab called "Margins & Header / Footer". From there adjust the margin numbers to a smaller setting (zero works). Now you should be able to print larger images without getting the edges cut off. The screenshot below shows the screen I mean. Firefox's default margins are set at 0.5 inches if you need a reference to put it back to default at a later time.
I found a really handy extension that you might like if you do a lot of printing and want a quick way to access the print preview feature from within Firefox. It's called Print / Print Preview extension and it adds a submenu to your context menu (the menu that pops up when you right click on a webpage) with "Print", "Print Preview" and "Page Setup". Very helpful, I'd used it for a while on XP and it saved me a lot of headaches getting the printer to print exactly as I wanted.
Hi. Your settings saved correctly: In the information you submitted with this question, I can see these values. (They are not the defaults, i think.)
print.print_margin_bottom 0.25
print.print_margin_left 0.2
print.print_margin_right 0.2
print.print_margin_top 0.25
print.print_unwriteable_margin_bottom 56 print.print_unwriteable_margin_left 25 print.print_unwriteable_margin_right 25 print.print_unwriteable_margin_top 25
I am asking for more information. What printer are you using, please?
@Swarnava: There are no tabs in page setup. Are you using linux?
@Gryllida: Those settings are there from a previous version, I think. They do not seem to be used by Firefox 17. When I set the settings printer_Print_to_File.print_margin_top and/or print.printer_Print_to_File.print_margin_top they are reset to 0.5 when I print. I am using the "print to file" printer, printing to a PDF file. By the way, I had to cut the information submitted because there was a maximum of 30000 characters.

Sorry, I was partly mistaken about the resetting of the prefs values. Only the prefs which do NOT start with print. are reset. Anyway thanks to your suggestion that I try another printer, I have solved the problem! My default printer is another one (It does not seem to be possible to make "print to file" default), and by setting the margins on this other printer (imt-tf), they are also used by the print to file printer (I can see that the settings printer_Print_to_File.print_margin_* have been updated with the values from printer_imt-tf.print_margin_* after printing) Thank you for pointing me in the right direction!
