FireFox keeps crashing today

Hello, FireFox has been crashing multiple times today. It's the first time it does this kind of thing. It usually crashes when I'm opening a page, but the page itself doesn't matter; I can open a page that had crashed FireFox earlier, and opening a page that was not crashing a couple minutes ago can make it crash. Also, whenever I try to save a file to my computer, the "Save file to..." window doesn't show any folder or file icon, just black squares, and clicking on "Save" doesn't do anything.

I'm running Windows 7, with FireFox 14.0.1 translated in Portuguese. I have installed the update more or less two weeks ago, but the issue began only today. I have tried reinstalling FireFox, but the issue is still the same. Everything else in my computer is working fine. I have run an anti-virus (which I have installed months ago) and two malware softwares looking for issues, and nothing.

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

  1. As we can see, you already sent us crash IDs, but these crash reports weren't sent to Mozilla. Next time Firefox crashes and you see the crash window, choose to send the crash report to Mozilla, so we can explore it and determine the source of your crash.
  2. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox location bar (that's where you enter your website names) and press Enter. You should now see a list of submitted crash reports.
  3. Copy the most recent 5 report IDs that you see in the crash report window and paste them into your forum response.

Thanks in advance for your help!

More information and further troubleshooting steps can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.

The issue is a bit worse today. Not only it crashes, but also some images just don't load, often the software becomes slow, tabs lock, and so on.

@marcsances: The crash reports don't work. All those crash reports I have added to my previous post were created when I tried to send them to Mozilla. None of them actually made it through. I don't know how to make the reports now... Even clicking on "Show details" in the crash window doesn't show anything.

@cor-el: I have disabled hardware acceleration in both Firefox and in the Flash player, but the issue is still there. I have turned off all my plug-ins and extensions, but the issue is still there, too.

However... When using safe mode (Help > Restart with extensions turned off) the issue appears to be gone (or at least to become significantly less frequent). The only theme I'm using is the default, I don't even have others installed... What could this mean?

In Safe mode hardware acceleration is disabled and also the JavaScript JIT compiler in addition to the extensions and themes. Plugins still work in Safe mode.

Did you close and restart Firefox after disabling hardware acceleration?

I have manually turned off all the plugins, together with using safe mode. I have restarted Firefox after disabling hardware acceleration (quite a few times, too). It's still crashing, and I still can't provide crash reports - they are all empty, says it's corrupted.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

See:

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

The new profile also crashed.

I have run:

  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • SuperAntispyware
  • Microsoft Safety Scanner
  • Spybot Search & Destroy
  • TDSSKiller
  • McAfee Antivirus

And Firefox still crashes. It's really interesting to notice that in safe mode it works. The only thing bothering me in safe mode is lack of access to the Favourites icon and how some fonts have been changed, otherwise I wouldn't mind just using safe mode all the time.

As cor-el said in his reply : "In Safe mode hardware acceleration is disabled and also the JavaScript JIT compiler....." try to disable (make it FALSE) in about:config all javascript.options.methodjit. you can find, and check it again : http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_crashes#JIT_compiler

thank you

Still crashing. Also tried a clean reinstall, and it's crashing, too. Is there a way to permanently keep Firefox under safe mode?

Before doing that, please try Firefox Portable. Firefox Portable is a Firefox build designed to work with no dependencies on any Firefox installation on your computer. This way, Firefox forgets any damaged profile or plug-in, and most times works well. If that build works, just uninstall your normal Firefox and create a Firefox Portable link for your convenience. If that doesn't work, you can edit your Firefox shortcut so it passes the parameter -safe-mode to the executable each time. For further information about command line arguments, please refer to this MozillaZine KB article.
