After activating the "clean history when closing", the "reopen tabs from last session" stopped working (thus loosing my tabs)

I had a lot of tabs open. I usually "clear the history" just before closing firefox, and i usually get my tabs back on when i open it, because i have set up the appropriate option for it.

Yesterday i figured "oh, let's make the cleaning of history automatic when i close firefox" so i checked that option.

But this morning all my tabs have disappeared! (and being guilty of tab-bulimia, maybe you know how much it hurts - i guess i'm guilty.)

I tested again by opening two tabs and closing + reopening, and none of the two tabs came up, only my home page.

Is it maybe that the history is cleaned _after_ closing the tabs? That would be most unfortunate, but maybe it is the expected behaviour? I'm disabling the automatic clean of my history for now, but i would be glad to find a fix for this.

Yes, as you've noticed, if you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear the "Browsing History" when you close Firefox then that prevails and Firefox doesn't restore currently open tabs the next time.

You will have to clear the history manually or consider to use Private Browsing mode to access website that you do not want to show in the history.

I understand, but this is not specified anywhere, and i am concerned of other people getting the same behaviour without warning. Nothing is informing of this, and it looks more like a bug than a feature. It could be possible to have the "reopen all tabs" option not-checked and the automatic cleaning of history, for example, if one wanted to achieve this "feature". If that is not technically possible, maybe a warning to tell that the "reopen tabs" option is not compatible with the "automatic cleaning of history" could be useful?

For App Tabs there is this extension, but nothing for normal tabs AFAIK.

  • Bug 577652 - Firefox should not pop the "Save and Quit" dialog when "clearing history after closing firefox" is checked
  • Bug 632271 - Entirely remove support for quit dialog

Thank you for the bugs you linked. It seems that it the issue is about how to accomodate both privacy and "safety" of not losing the tabs.
