What does Firefox use to construct the site icons on the "New Tab" page?

As a developer, I would like the "New Tab" page icons for my websites to look as good as possible. I notice in my Firefox that the icons for some sites (like Amazon, for instance) are clear and sharp, and are usually some form of the organization's logo. My sites' icons are simply reduced-size images of the first page of the site with my favicon in a small overlay. So what do I need to create and include in my sites to cause a high-quality icon to be generated?
