Mozilla.org causes hang on restart w/ restore
Got one message saying something about the server connection being broken during the page loading. Then I force quite FF and tried again, and got a runaway script popup box -- but the buttons were non-functional so I could not stop the stupid script. Had to vorce quite again.
firefox is proving to be a real piece of shit software.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode;
Type about:preferences<Enter> in the address bar
Select Advanced > General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.
Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?
Then restart.
It takes me a couple hours to get FF working again after shutting down. Not until I'm FORCED to shut it down.
It takes me a couple hours to get FF working
You did not mention that in your post. When you start Firefox in Safe Mode, all add-ons and user settings are disabled. If the problem goes away, or is still there, that tells us something. For example, one of the programs on the computer could be the cause of the issue. Or an add-on.
Some problems occurs when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;
- Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
- Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see
Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet. {web link}
Not running any security apps. Just OSX 10.6.8
Had a lockup so Force Quit after 10 minutes. Spent the last 2 hours doing this:
TROUBLESHOOTING WHY IT TAKES 7 MINUTES FOR FF TO BECOME RESPONSIVE AGAIN AFTER DRAGGING A TAB TO BECOME A STAND-ALONE WINDOW:
SPENT AN HOUR OR SO DOING THIS: restart did not reload session turned off all AddOns Turned on one at a time Opened two tabs on one window Dragged the problematic tab to become a new Window
No problems.
THEREFORE THIS IS NOT AN ADDON PROBLEM
TROUBLESHOOTING PROBLEM THAT FF ALWAYS BECOMES NOT RESPONSIVE & SPINNER UP FOR AT LEAST 10 MINUTES (THEN I GIVE UP & FORCE QUIT) EVERY TIME THAT I ATTEMPT TO RELOAD A SESSION
restart reload session at 3 min Not Responding
at 6 min popup re script buttons not functional on popup spinner up
after 5 min of spinner, Force Quit
THIS NON FUNCTIONAL UNRESPONSIVE SCRIPT POPUP HAS HAPPENED BEFORE
restart 8:54 reload session went Not Responding & Spinner after a few minutes
At some point "not responding" disappeared, but went to FF and it did not respond to controls for a minute. Then able to scroll the page, then Spinner came up again.
Force quit after 15 minutes.
APPARANTLY FF ALWAYS HITS A BAD PAGE AND GETS STUCK
FF FAILS TO HANDLE THIS ERROR PROPERLY !!!!!
HOW DO I MAKE FF NOT AUTOMATICALLY OPEN PREVIOUS SESSION AFTER A CRASH? I WANT THE DIALOG BOX.
What is the difference between Mac Console saying Not Responsive and the Chromatic Spinner of Wait Forever ?
I presume the Spinner is an active process (which I have no way ot getting details about AFAIK).
I just reloaded PART of the session. 5 of 20 windows. Not keeping count of total tabs. After I post this I will load another 5, etc until FF crashes.
Reloaded 2nd set of 5. Spinner up for a while, took a few minutes.
3rd set of 5, crashed my computer:
While reloading, I have Console on top of my screen, Activity Monitor behind that, and FF on the bottom. I can see all three but Console is "active" and I can see the Spinner, if its up, by moving the cursor over the portion of the screen showing FF.
Saw that the spinner went away, but the "broken circle" icon in the Tab was still up. Moved FF to the front. The web page "jumped" and then: I can move the cursor around, but have no control over MY ENTIRE COMPUTER. Cannot scroll the page Move over the Apple Icon, the drop-down does not appear. Cannot invoke Force Quit via keyboard shortcut Move icon to the bottom of the screen, but the Apple Menu Bar does not pop-up -- cannot switch to another application. Had to crash the computer by holding down the Power Switch.
and here we are. Pissed off, and unproductive.
In the address bar, type about:crashes. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers, click it and select Submit.
Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.
If you can't get Firefox to open, you will have to do this the hard way. Open the file browser / explorer on your computer. Enter this;
%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted
Copy the last 5-7 Recent File Names in the folder, including the date and time created. Post all the information in the reply box below.
Had another hangup so re-opened FF and went thru the batch process of re opening previous session.
Made it thru, finally. Almost Force Quit when it went Not Responding, but in a couple of minutes it became responsive again.
SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE WAY FIREFOX HANDLES RE-OPENING WEB PAGES.
I'm using the Session Manager addon to do these batch restarts, but it is just an "index" -- the re-opening is handled by the native FF Restore Session function.
To stop Firefox from trying to resume the session that was running when Firefox closed, start FF by using a web link or use the FF icon by right clicking it and select Open New Window.
How many tabs are in the session(s) that you try to open?
FYI Just noticed that I now have TWO FF icons in the Dock. The one in the usual location in the dock is not open. The one on the far right is open. Maybe at some point I selected "reopen in new session" instead of "append to current session."
HOW MANY TABS: I count about 67. Want to keep about 150 open.
CRASH REPORTS: only 1 & prefixed by bp. Date submitted 8/16/14.
Seems to me that if I Force Quit, that's a crash that ought to be reported...
BTW still taking 6-7 minutes to move a tab into its own window.
FYI Ghostery throws an error when I drag a tab to become a new window. However, the many minutes of unresponsiveness occur whether or not Ghostery is enabled. So its not a Ghostery problem.
BUT when I drag a "normal" page, I only get about 30 repetitive lines of Console Error messages:
10/6/14 2:55:20 AM [0x0-0x1a01a].org.mozilla.firefox console.error: 10/6/14 2:55:20 AM [0x0-0x1a01a].org.mozilla.firefox [CustomizableUI] 10/6/14 2:55:20 AM [0x0-0x1a01a].org.mozilla.firefox Widget 'ghostery-button-container' not found, unable to move
When I dragged the Add Ons tab, there were 20 times the number of repetitions (by putting a ruler on the screen and measuring length on the page) and prior to the above, some different errors :
ADDONS PAGE DRAG:

OK, FF just crashed my computer again. I had a window with 2 tabs, this discussion page and another mozilla.org discussion page.
I dragged the latter to become a new window and at first it behaved as usual: down click on the trackpad drag the Tab down onto the screen let go the trackpad a couple seconds and the page appears on the screen if I act fast, I can move the pointer on the screen, but not scroll the page. The Chromatic Spinner appears and locks me out of FF.
THIS TIME after a few seconds, the screen went black. Except for a white border on the edge of my screen.
Could not access Force Quit with keyboard, no pointer, could not get the Dock to appear.
Used Power Key to shut down.
restarted, errors showing in Console. I think I have included a few lines of the restart. Is "NVDA" something to do with my video chip? (Mac Book Pro 2.66 GHz Intel core i7) I have seen NVDA errors before, associated with wacko page rendering, but scrolling or something made the page display properly.
Note 3 bolded time stamps. They appear out of chronological sequence, which I have never noticed before.

Just got about 3/4 thru reloading previous session in batches, when one tab hung up. The Unresponsive Script message appeared, but the frigging buttons were NOT FUNCTIONAL and the Chromatic Spinner came up and that lasted about 10-15 minutes (dunno exactly, I went to get a snack) and now the tab is up & working.
How many HOURs have I wasted TODAY on this ???
OK... next batch & got ANOTHER unresponsive script popup where the "stop script" button is not functional, and the Spinner came up... and twice the spinner went away for a few seconds allowing me to click futilely on the non-working button... probably took 10 minutes to clear.
But also -- immediately after the popup, ANOTHER window appeared and overlaid the first window. Fortunately, the size of theat new window was small, and I could click on the problem window to make the popup visible again.
So its possible that often times I don't even KNOW the popup is there, because FF brings up another window on top to start trying to restore. Not that knowing about it is good for anything, since the friccking buttons don't work...
And this happened the other day, just found the image of the error msg...
When I tried to create a brand new Window, FF gave an Unresponsive Script error:
Well, that came out miniscule so I'll type it out: chrome://browser/content/customizableui/toolbar.xml:182
Modified
Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All of them.
Yesterday, Mozilla.org was unavailable. Whenever I tried restoring a session including the half dozen tabs of mozilla content -- FF would lock up in one way or another, on a mozilla tab. Or some other, but it seems significant that mozilla in particular gave problems.
Spent a lot of time disabling addons and restarting and experimenting trying to find an addon to blame.
Even with addons off, FF locked up every time, on one tab or another.
Also, when I open a new window, it happens fast when no windows have any content (just one empty tab).
But when I have many windows & tabs open with content, opening a new window takes 6-7 minutes.
Oh, and many instances of the Unresponsive Script popup appearing, but none of the buttons work.
And also having the popup inaccessable due to the WINDOW menu dropping down & locking "open" and covering up the popup window.
I shutdown the Mac to clean out some caches etc.
Tried to reopen previous session. FF became Not Responsive. Went away for 1:20 & there was a Unresponsive Script popup... but none of the response buttons was active. Then the Spinner came up too.
So I brought another App to the top of my screen & worked with it for a while.
Then I could not get FF to appear on my screen. It should come to the top when I click on the FF icon in the Macintosh Dock. But it does not.
I suppose I could close all the Apps overlaying FF to get to it but that's not acceptable. So I Force Quit, as usual.
FIREFOX FAILS TO HANDLE UNRESPONSIVE SCRIPTS. PERIOD.
Still trying to get the damn thing to restore the session...
Happened again so I closed my email program. Loading the sesison in batches. A previously loaded tab was on top, spinner spinning. According to the top banner on my screen, the active app is "Console."
So there is probably an unresponsive script fucking it up -- but the tab with that script, and the popup, are NOT ON TOP !!!
