I have read a similar problem already on these forums but the situation is not quite the same. A typical browsing day, I will hit Ctrl+B to open the bookmarks sidebar. When I wish to close the sidebar I will click the X. It is quite random, today included that the sidebar does not close when I click the X. Today's attempt, when I click it, it lights up red but the sidebar does not close. Clicking the Bookmarks button up top or using Ctrl+B will usually close it though.

After closing it prior to coming to this forum, the behavior is correct again.

Previous site I was on is Flash heavy.

This problem has followed since about FF 21.0

It could be a problem with the graphics hardware acceleration. Many users found that turning it off fixes many problems. If that does not help, you may need to reset Firefox to its defaults.

======================================

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps:

  • Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  • In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
  • In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  • Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Try to close the sidebar with the Ctrl+B shortcut key or the toolbar button if you have one (you can find it in the toolbar palette; Firefox menu button > Options > Toolbar Layout).

You can also check for problems caused by a corrupted localstore.rdf file.
