How/where do you clear the history and how do you confirm you still have history ?

See the steps taken in the link to the same issue in my first post as to the steps I have taken.

Non-deletion of the History is verified by beginning to type in a URL in the address bar; it still starts suggesting URLs, and also the drop-down "History" buttons show 10 items from previous sessions. that suggests to me the history is still hanging around somewhere.

Very odd.

Update: Now it seems that the thing is drawing only suggestions as I type in the URL bar from my bookmarks. The fix was totally spontaneous, but it might have had something to do with toggling the "delete history when closing" with "don't keep my history," setting it back to "delete history when closing" and restarting between the steps.

Gremlins.

If those items in the drop-down list have a star next to it then these are bookmarks. You might have visited these bookmarked pages the previous time.

Yes, was aware of that...but tracking it through library/history seemed to indicate that all was not well.

In any case, the gremlin has vanished, and all is working fine now.
