I get 30 - 50 emails every day completely unsolicited. How do I stop them?

You cannot stop them, unless you use a new email address. To deal with the daily spam use the Thunderbird built-in spam filter. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Junk_Mail_Controls
To limit the amount of spam, use your email address with care. Don't give it to everyone, don't use it to register for newsletters, etc., don't publish it in a public forum or web site.
