In a pinned tab -- how to force link click to open in new tab?
I am trying to get ALL links clicked to open in new TAB. Before upgrade to v37.0.02 this worked beautifully but I have started to notice some links are now updating the PINNED TAB, rather than opening the link in a new tab. Only some.
All these sites I used before upgrade to v37.0.2. So I am confused as to why. What changed?
I have followed Co-rel guidance here: https://support.mozilla.org/pl/questions/970999

You can set the browser.link.open_newwindow to 1 on the about:config page http://kb.mozillazine.org/about:config
See:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.link.open_newwindow (default: 3) 1: current tab; 2:new window; 3:new tab;
This pref set the behavior for JavaScript links:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction (default: 2) 0:all; 1:none; 2:only special windows
Can you please tell me how can I tell if link is a "JavaScript links"?
Thankyou

You can middle-click a bookmark to open this bookmark in a new tab. Otherwise you would have to use an extension to open a bookmark by default in a new tab.
- Open Bookmarks in New Tab: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/open-bookmarks-in-new-tab/

Ok, it just happened again.
The Link I am clicking is within an App (Fx is open already), and when I click the link in external App, I am directed to Fx web browser, but rather than open in a new tab, Fx is updaating the last "Pinned Tab"
How do I get Fx to open this link in a new tab?
thankyou
Ok, it just happened 'yet again,
This time, I clicked from Bookmark Toolbar and FX updated "last Pinned Tab"', rather than open the bookmark in new Tab.
Again, pre v37.0.2 this all worked beautifully. Now Broken. No change in my Tab extensions/add-ons.
There is this pref to override the behavior of opening a link in an external application.
- browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external
If this pref has the default value -1 then browser.link.open_newwindow is used. The meaning of the value of the browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external is the same as of browser.link.open_newwindow
- 1:current tab; 2:new window; 3:new tab;
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.link.open_newwindow
Cool its working again. Thankyou Cor-el! Now how do I force these new tabs focus to always be in focus. its working again but the tab that was active, its holding the focus, rather than the focus shifting to the new tab (created by clicking link)
Modified
There are three prefs, accessible via the about:config page, to control the focus if you click a link.
- browser.tabs.loadInBackground (normal links)
- browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground (javascript)
- browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground
Thankyou Cor-el for all your helpful replies. I wondered how is it all these settings got trashed in upgrade to v37.0.2. I did not install any new tab addons. So I am confused.
Now I noticed, Fx, If I have a tab not pinned, and click a bookmark, it is now opening the bookmark in the unpinned tab. I dont desire this. I want Fx to open the bookmark item in a new tab.
When I have newtab (the one with my 6 pinned icons of webpages) and I click a pinned icon from newtab OR a google search page, and I click a link from that page (then I would want FX to open the link in the existing tab. For both these scenarios the tab would not be pinned.
thankyou

Thanks Cor-el. I use a Trackpad so I dont believe I have middle click. All bookmarks for me need to open in new tab unless the unpinned tab exists and it is either Fx newtab or Google Search Page.
--- Now today, I noticed, New Tab is being opened after i enter something in search and click enter. Rather than returning the result to the Last unpinned tab that I had open (e.g. FX's new tab)
--- i installed the add-on. all sorted now.
