I clicked on a link while using firefox, I'm usually extremely careful about what I click on, and as soon as I clicked the link I wanted, a different window popped up and it was some sort of mac keeper or cleaner. I clicked the 'X' but that sent me to some sort of genieo and ever since, I get these vidxo pop ups only when I'm in firefox and I can't get rid of genieo. I went through the manual process of removing genieo and that won't go away either. I also removed firefox, rebooted, installed firefox but that did not work. Infact, I don't think firefox really was uninstalled because if it was, how did it remember my customized home pages.

Please assist.

I actually just went into my profile and took a look at the directories and files within. I saw tons of files and directories that related to genieo, vidxo, and Mozilla/Firefox (and some other plist files that after a little research, I did not need at all), so I deleted them. I restarted my Mac, reinstalled Firefox, imported my saved bookmarks, and that did the trick.

Your profile suggestion woul have worked as well. I did not boot into safemode but that's always a smart thing to do. Thanks for the response.

You can check for recently installed suspicious or unknown extensions.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
