TB24 hanging up, freezing, performing slowly. Works in in safe mode. CAUSE: Gdata Internet Security(?)

I have Win 7 Pro on my laptop and desktop. Security software is Gdata Internet Security 2014 and Gdata Internet Security 2015. Problem occurs w/both versions of Gdata, even if I have the e-mail function turned off.

If I operate the desktop in Windows Safe mode (w/network) and TB in Safemode, TB seems to work w/out freezing or excessive slowing (in not responding when asked to transfer an e-mail to another folder, and periodically when an e-mail is being typed, very slow in going from one e-mail to another, showing that an e-mail has been transferred to another folder per filter, but then when that folder is opened, having to wait, and wait, and wait for the e-mail to actually appear).

If I operate Win 7 in a selective mode that loads systems services, and TB is in safe mode, then transfer of e-mails from one folder to the other is slowed, etc. Not as badly when Win 7 does a normal start up.

I use TB to manage two accounts, one gmail, one other (q.com), the q.com was slower in latter situation then the gmail. Both are set up as POP at this time, I had originally had the gmail in imap, but this is a new machine and apparently when the seller (they build their own systems) transferred what they could (hard drive on prior machine was failing) they set up TB w/both accounts as POP.

Clearly something is being loaded w/"system services" that's slowing TB, but I don't know how to figure out just what it is. It also seems that something slows it down a little that's included in "system services" but then another bit of software or something greatly increases the slowdown. In each of these modified start ups, the e-mail screening function of Gdata was disabled.

Version of TB 24.6.0

I don't know how to figure out what is interacting badly w/TB. I would appreciate some assistance and I'm also wondering what to do if whatever is causing the problem is something I need to use.

Did not have this problem w/using XP Pro w/earlier version of TB.

Dear Wayne,

Earlier, you asked me about the size of my "training.dat" file. I found it buried deeply in the Users folder; it had 85KB of data. When I Reset Training Data again in TB, the file disappeared.

I have TB set as an IMAP account.

In order to do the Win8.1 Safe Mode test, I will have to reset the TB account to Junk Filtering, then run the test. I will get to that soon.

I still think we are working on the same problem even though you have a Win7 computer, and I have a Win8.1. I spent hours trying various things with my paid-for AV program. I finally got into a phone conversation with an Ad-Aware tech rep who took over my computer. He did this, that and the other thing, then declared that Ad-Aware was not causing any of my TB slow-down problems. After all that he strongly suggested that their technicians do a thorough diagnostic reading and make a lot of adjustments. All this for ~$300+! I thanked the fellow for his help, but I really resented the hustle.

Tried searching My computer, c drive with that search term. Result: "no items match your search. Then, since I'd noticed that the profiles were in a subdirectory of "roaming" I tried adding that. Same result.

I still have no idea of what the path is.   

Gdata allows one to list just a file, so I've tried that with the scanning. Not sure I can do that w/the firewall.

Do you have any additional suggestions for determining the path?

I've now added as an exception both a specific file (the profile listed as default in TB's troubleshooting report) and the directory of TB profiles (there are two profiles, both w/a name.default, so apparently two "default" profiles?) in Gdata's antivirus section/page/settings.

Result: so far TB is not as slow. It's still slow at opening up new e-mails, and definitely still slow in deleting e-mails, but it's not as slow--noticeably not.

I haven't tried typing a long e-mail yet to see the hanging/freezing/"TBird not responding" message problem continues.

However, I still can't (1) open up a link for a gmail e-mail (or an e-mail in my gmail address' inbox) without disabling the Gdata firewall (the message I get is that the Windows firewall has also been disabled but if it's happening, it's nothing I'm doing), I just did it w/my q.com e-mail address though; (2) read an article while using FF, decide to send a link to the article to someone and send the link. Still get the smtp.gmail.com server not working,e tc.. etc. I have to save the e-mail as a draft (and that happens slowwwwwwwwwlllllllly), then open TB and send the e-mail. smtp.gmail.com server somehow magically functions when before it didn't work.

Not sure what else to try.

I am waiting to hear from Gdata tech support 2 days today since I filed the request for assistance). Unless I do something in the "advanced" (or maybe it was manual?) Firewall, I'm stuck w/automatic and after reading the help section for the Firewall, I'd have to acquire quite a bit of knowledge/skill to manually set up the Firewall. Or so it seems.

That's how I found it. Except that in Win7 pro, you don't see Computer arrow tip Local Disk C arrow tip (AT) User AT, etc in that top box.

All I see is User At Roaming AT Thunderbird AT Profiles.

Which is why I asked about determining the path.

I have no idea why what I see when I type in %appdata% is different then what's shown in the you tube video, only that it is.

I tried typing a long e-mail, there is still frequent hanging/loss of cursor/"thunderbird not responding"

I use windows 7 pro and I see it exactly as you describe. A little trick I learned (as you know DOS) is to click after the path in those dialogs and the path appears in dos style notation which you can right click and copy or Ctrl + C

I still use the dos prompt and it makes locating and entering some of the mile long paths simple

You're not me of course, but I'd consider getting rid of gdata. Sounds like they are a bit invasive

I don't put in the profile name. Rather, I put in the Thunderbird directory, and then everything under it is covered.

If by selective you mean Windows's system services, then you'll need to identify which service by trial and error. My bet would be on something like windows updates. Or do you have a Windows AV program installed?

I didn't have any of these problems when I used an earlier version of TB and XP Pro. I'm on the second year of using Gdata.

I used to use AVG--it was fine for 3 years or so--but when problems did occur I quickly got tired of what had become poor tech support--it took months to resolve what turned out to be a failure to get along of some DVD software that had been on that system since I'd gotten it (2 years by then, I think) and the then latest version of the AVG software. Plus the scans slowed my pc more & more w/each new AVG version.

I did a free trial of one of kaspersky's security softwares and it too slowed my system way way down.

Gdata didn't do that, didn't seem to create any problems, until Win 7 and the latest version of TB. So to me, it's questionable where the problems originate and some evidence that the problems may not arise w/Gdata.

For a short time, I used a free version of Avast antivirus and its frequent popups to tell me what a wonderful job it was doing (hey I've been updated again!!!) were really annoying and I couldn't find a setting to stop the popups (and I have set no popups on everything I can set for no popups). I think it was just an antivirus program, it didn't seem to slow things down or interfere w/them noticeably.

I'll try your suggestions.

What reason do I have to believe that TB developers have solved this problem in the new version? Or that the compatibility issues won't be even worse?

I don't have the knowledge to understand the advance notes/list of problems solved & remaining (I've tried), so I have no way of reading the release notes and thinking, hmmm, looks like my problems might've been solved or nope, looks like something's been added that might make it worse.

Here's is Gdata's response to my support requests (came yesterday, I was away from computers most of yesterday and enjoyed the break).

" - Add the Thunderbird "Profiles" folder to the Exceptions of the Real Time Protection module (Settings > AntiVirus > Real time protection > button "Exceptions"). The “Profiles” folder is in the folder "C:\Users\Username\AppData\Thunderbird\".

- Or to go into the Advanced settings of the Real Time Protection and change the “mode” from "Check read&write access" to "Only check on execution".

I was also told to check that the Windows Firewall was disabled/put Gdata on the automatic (non-advanced) setting--which is the setting I'd been using from the beginning (since I don't consider myself to be knowledgeable/"advanced" when it comes to firewalls).

I did try the second suggestions (re: real time protection).

TB is now operating at a decent speed, however, I STILL cannot click on a link w/in an e-mail--the connection is blocked I get a "x server/website isn't responding message", however, if I open FF, paste the link in, I'll be connected. Same for if I'm in FF, want to e-mail the link/address of what I'm reading online to someone, TB opens, etc., cannot send the e-mail.

If I save that e-mail as a draft. Open TB, find the e-mail, click on the edit button (w/in the e-mail), click send--no problem it's sent.

and I haven't tried writing a long e-mail, as of Sunday, TB still hung/cursor disappeared, exhibited "Thunderbird not responding" message when I wrote an e-mail more then a short paragraph.

I've responded to Gdata w/a statement of the continuing problems (see above), guess I'll see if they respond to that or if I have to file new "support requests."

I have no reason to believe that it IS, or IS NOT fixed. It's just one thing to try.

I'm not sure how to answer your question. I could conclude I need to tell gdata what it needed to see TB as an exception. Not sure of any broader implication or conclusion but that could be my lack of knowledge of this field (ie., computer tech).

I understand that you said that I should do another post/post another question re: unable to click on link w/in an e-mail (that is in the TB inbox) ie., FF cannot connect w/outside server, nor could I send an e-mail w/in FF.

I talked to a Gdata support system today: we changed two settings on Gdata e-mail protection system and I can now do the latter.

Still cannot click on link & be connected from a link on a received e-mail.--at least not using FF as my default browser. I can if I use Opera as my default browser, it was the gdata person who suggested that (finished kicking myself for not thinking of trying it). I think it's the latest version of Opera, downloaded it only a few weeks ago, plus it updated a day or so ago.

However, logs of what's happening when I'm using FF as default brower & can't connect to a link w/in an e-mail were sent to Gdata and I'm supposed to hear w/in a few days what they discovered and what can, perhaps, be done to make that not so. In the meantime, I guess Opera's going to be my default browser.

My impression is I should post another question to discuss what I hear from Gdata on the above problem, is that right?

Otherwise, thanks to everyone for their assistance & suggestions.

And I'm still having problems w/the cursor disappearing and TB hanging when typing long e-mails.
