When I am on a link and want to return to the previous page, I click the leftward arrow on tab tool bar as I have done for years. Recently, when I click the leftward arrow, there appears to be a bit of a jump and I am not returned to the previous page, but to a clear page. I can click back and forth and finally get a return to the previous page, but it breaks my concentration and takes time.

I have updated with no improvements. Something is weird. I have not yet opened in a safe mode nor attempted to remove cookies.

I use a Macbook myself, I also use this key to move back and forth between pages and it works perfectly fine for me.. My suggestion to you is, try running Firefox in Safe Mode and if that doesn't work try to remove cookies since you've not tried that yet.

If you need help doing so, please click the links below:

Is this about returning to a Google results page after you have clicked a link to open a specific result?

If that is the case then try to disable Google Instant on the Google Search settings page.
