How do I stop Firefox from opening 2 tabs in every window that is opened?
I have spent hours reading all the suggested solutions to this problem and have tried everything I can to resolve this, but nothing is working. I don't understand the "user.js" references, but I've done all the Tools changes and even gone to about:config and modified some functions there regarding the tabs and homepage as recommended, but the problem persists. I just updated Firefox, too, and it seems they still haven't fixed this problem that is so irritating to so many.

the new tab page will show 3x3 thumbnails from your most visited sites per default - if you want it to show your homepage instead though, you can set that too:
enter about:config into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named browser.newtab.url. double-click it and change its value to about:home (or any other custom page you want to set).

hello, which pages are showing - the welcome to firefox 29 page next to your regular homepage? an easy thing that you could try is to reset firefox and see if this can address the issue...
This did fix the problem FINALLY. I had to redo some of my customizations, but it didn't take too long. One other thing that is happening, though, is when I do open a new tab, it's opening a history page instead of my homepage. Shouldn't new tabs open on the homepage unless they've been opened with a link?

Got it! Thank you.
