I reached you this time through a Adobe Reader up-grade.I also have the MS security shield in the tray, but nothing says Microsoft. Thank you for any help you can extend.

XP Anti-virus is a rogue application, for details on it including how to remove it see http://www.precisesecurity.com/rogue/xp-anti-virus-2011/

The 2 applications it mentions to remove it, Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware are considered by many to be amongst the best anti-malware applications.

You may find that it is screwing up Internet Explorer, too - that happened to me on Saturday. You may have to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and SuperAntispyware - http://www.superantispyware.com/ on a different PC, and transfer them to a USB key so you can install them on the infected PC. Either of them should be able to get rid of it, but Malwarebytes had to be installed in my Admin account on WinXP, where Super Antispyware worked from the Limited account I use everyday.

I had older versions of those programs saved on my "tools" USB flash drive, so I didn't have to download them.
